View original topic: Oval single or double exhaust pipe

Hi,
can you tell me when the single exhaust pipe was exchanged to a double one?

Thanks

Hello Mounty.
I believe it was in August of 1955 For the 1956 model. This is when the factory made cut outs for dual "piece shooter"exhaust. Many many many changes were made this year and that was one of them. Hope this helps.

I have a '55 oval with VIN number 1-0863978 (production approximately March '55) with double exhaust pipe.
So my muffler is not correct?

SRM1956 is correct if you have a March 1955 oval you should have a single tip exhaust and your apron should NOT have cut outs for two exhausts. Check for that, that is more important than whether you have one of two tips. Its very possible that a PO installed a 2 tip replacement muffler at some point due to it being easier to locate.

Its "pea shooter" NOT "piece shooter"

Years ago when I first got my oval I go a auto store to pick up some oil and the older guy at the counter spots the bug and asks the typical questions and then asks, "does it have dualies?" I'm sure I gave him a look of bewilderment for a moment as I didn't instantly realize that he was asking if it had pea shooters.

Funny stuff. As we digress even further, I pull up to a local car show the other night and park next to a 66 TBird. He tells me I need a new exhaust its too loud.

OK, I'll bite and go even further. 66 T-bird? Likely had a V8 in excess of 400 ci, "dualies" and likely glass packs or something like that. Guy was likely just jealous of your ride and being a hater. Or maybe he mistook your son making a fweem-ish sound kind of like doing a motore boat for the actual exhaust.

Back to point,
ProgRefinements engine section page 4-Aug-55 Muffler: Now: single chamber, with 2 exhaust tail pipes and connecting pipe for pre-heating tube. Interesting that I don't see any mention of the apron in the body section.

As I get out of the car he tells me to "watch my door". Like I am going to dent his 9ft long body panels. Dude what about my door? Pretty sure you don't have to say those types of things at a "car" show. What an idiot. Ok back to topic sorry guys.

It could be used on either a bug or bus. Look at WW website under 25-36 hp muffler for both bug and bus and you see the tip
http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=111251165B same part # comes up under the single tip bug muffler.

your bug will look great sporting it.

For reference, this tip was used on Buses in 1959 only.

Earlier Buses had a shorter tip.

My bad, I didn't pick up that the WW 25-36 hp exhaust tip does NOT have a bend to it. It's a straight tip that goes from round to square. Still listed under both bus & bug however - whether that's right or not.

Everett beat me to it...the tip you need for a pre-55' exhaust is the oval circle tip. Not as easy to find as the 59' bus tip, which I actually think is cooler looking, but not correct. CIP has one that is pretty close to OG, but I haven't tried to fit it on a stock pre-55' exhaust.

Sucks about the T-bird owners attitude. Thunderbird owners are equal to Corvette owners in my mind. Probably just jealous of the VW's factory dual exhaust!!
