Hello Fellow BUG FOLK,

I have a small but annoying issue. I recently replaced my alternator on my 1964 bug and found that the fan was damaged as a result of the bold on the back on the fan not being centered properly. Anyhow, I bought a new fan, which i made sure was the upright non doghouse fan, and it fit well. However, when the engine runs and I drive it, it sounds like it rubs on the shroud. So i open the lid, and pull the shroud towards me a big and it goes away. That being said, once I start driving again, it starts making that noise again. Any suggestions on keeping the shroud still or what? Thanks.

Jose

Take a look at the left over parts from replacing that fan. You might have some spacers that should be behind the fan to keep it from rubbing the housing. Gap should be (IIRC) around .080" or so.

Sometimes you can fix that pretty fast by simply by loosening the strap on the generator and pushing or pulling it a millimeter or two to the front or rear and retightening.

X2! Just make sure the shroud screws are all installed and tight so the rubbing won't return after a big bump.

The only time I had a fan noise is when I had a 1600 fan in a 1300 fan shroud. 2 different sizes. Sorry I cant be more help.
