View original topic: Look Ma, dual Kadrons!

Got tired of chasing the stumble and bog that my Solex Pict 34/3 kept handing me. Switched from a Chinese 009 distributor to a factory vacuum advance unit, swapped out two different Solex carbs besides the original, having gone through each and everyone of them, in an attempt to get good clean running, decent idle, and eliminate the dreaded bog, all in vain. Pulled out two crusty Kads that had been sitting for at least fifteen years. I kitted both carbs after a thorough cleaning, and after a couple hours of chasing the Gremlins I had a very nice running little car , finally. Here are some pics.

This is my 74 with the Kads installed.

This is the driver's side carb, in the upper right you can see the vacuum stem that I added, after consulting the performance section posts.

I am running the balance tube in between the manifolds, not sure if this makes a real difference or not.

This is how she sits now, I did have to add the little breather above, as I no longer had the center mount air cleaner to run the oil fill breather to. The car runs awesome now, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this upgrade to any one, I will be modifying these carbs with offroad overflow extensions, and probably change the linkage a little, as well as consider one of the SVDA distributors.

my Triumph Bonneville would not idle without the carb balance tube. it idled better if you jammed a main jet in the middle of the tube.

Ive never had much luck with a balance tube. I've always removed them. IMHO a balance tube will help hide a poorly adjusted and sync set of carbs. I've had better luck getting a correct balance without it.

It is interesting to read Bashr's comment, as I could never get a good synch on my Weber 44IDFs on my sandrail when the balance tube was on there. I tuned and synched without, and under load it was awesome, but found after good and warm the idle was "lumpy". I reinstalled the balance tube and now the idle is good again. Go figure.

I've always read that dual carbs are a prob off road, but I have no first hand experience with that. Is it going to really be a concern?

Weber and Dellorto two barrels are fine, but most of the single barrel dual carb set ups suffer from overflow problems, some more easily corrected than others. I will be doing some future mods to these Kadrons, I happen to be one of those that loves dual carbs over single carb set ups. Once the initial set up was done on my Weber carbs I have never touched them except to clean the idle jets out.

We have run dual webers 44IDF's and dual Dell's back in the day. We have never had problems with them off road. Ounce you set he linkage and sync the carbs they hardly need touching except maybe to clean an idle jet. We do side hills and steep inclines and declines, again never a problem. Run with the correct fuel pressure of around 3lbs, they don't flood in extreme woops or anything. I've even seen them run upside down for awhile (don't ask). After running duals I don't understand why anyone wouldn't, unless you haven't.

What you gonna do to not get em to flood when you're on the bumps? I ask because I'm gonna be setting up a set of kadrons for my baja. I was thinkin i'd plug the existing hole and drill and tap a new on ontop of the fuel bowl and use a npt barb and some hose. I haven't looked to much into exactly how.. Just wondering how you're gonna do it..

Good info, the stock single on my baja is pretty junky and the previous owner removed the heat risers and I hated the idea of spending money just to fix that when I wanted duals all along. Just cuz I never had a vw with aftermarket duals :D

Congrats on the work. Been there. It's nice to get rid of the dreaded bog!

On Kadron carbs the overflow points at approximately a 30* angle toward the air cleaner stem, you take a piece of brass tubing at about 3/16 diameter and bend it to match the angle of the overflow and the angle of the air cleaner stud, insert into overflow opening, silicone and zip tie into place, instant extended overflow tube. As stated in my post, these carbs have been modified for vacuum advance as well, I will NEVER use a 009 again!

I saw a pair of Kaddies locally for $250 and even though i just got my zenith up and running (which i have about $500 in), i was really tempted to get them.

Well the difference in seat of the pants acceleration and smoothness is amazing, as stated before.

Dale, I was wondering the same thing!

Sorry about the brain fart, the 44IDF is what's on their now, first set of duals was Weber 34ICT. The ICT's did not last long. They were great running until it got rough, bouncing around did not suit them well at all. But I did learn to tune and synch duals while I had them, so it was still a worthwhile experience.
