This is a very simple, very basic question im sure. But what exactly needs replacing to fix this? The split is now the complete length of the rubber.

Thanks :)

I would replace the whole shock. if your going to take the time to try to replace the bushing you might as well replace the shock they are real cheap. if it rotted out like that it must be time for new shocks.

Looks like your shocks are bottoming out a lot. Is the car lowered?

Yeah, it's lowered

So, as I suspected, the rubber is breaking because your suspension is mostly riding or hitting on the rubber stops. You may need shorter shocks, or just live with regularly replacing the rubber.

I see, i will look into this. Thanks :) Would the second thing i posted a link be the thing that would need constant replacement?

yes the second thing, better to just get a lowered set of shocks like such

http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Shocks-Bugpack...geToLoad=2

you need to look at the description where it says the collapse and extended length-then look at your suspension-find out what those lengths are

to measure collapse length set the car on the ground(no shocks, and have someone stand in the trunk) measure the distance from the shock mount points

now lift the car(still no shocks) and measure the distance again for extended length

now find a shock that fits that range
