View original topic: Question about door guts reassembling.

I just stripped out/broke down the doors in my bug getting it ready to be painted. While taking them out is one thing, putting the pieces back in is another. What order should I go in when reassembling the doors in the near future?

1971 Superbeetle Type 2

Order in which I took parts out is (side panels off):

1. Rolled down the window took loose the felt channel (not too bad damage to it) used a screw driver to get the clips out.

2. popped out the inner window rubber thing (but about an inch of it was behind the vent window assembly so I had to leave it loose in there.

3. While window was rolled down took out the 2 hex head screws holding the window in, took out the screw below it and slid the window out safely.

4. Took loose the chrome piece which was broken near vent window.

5. Took out the hex screw and top screw holding in the vent window post. Then wiggled the vent window out which allowed me to get the inner rubber window piece out.

6. Removed the screws holding in the door window roller up and downer, got it out.

7. Took out the tiny clipped in felt channel piece.

8. Took off the outer door handle then the door catch/release mechanisum.

Though, I dunno if reversing this is the best method for re-installation of all components.

Step 1!!! install the window regulator FIRST.

It needs to be set in place first because the vent window installs over top of the regulator..... learned the hard way.....

Leave the bottom of the regulator arm unbolted so you can slip the window glass back in at the end.

Step 2. install the chrome, remember there is a small screw at the top
Step 3. install the vent window
Step 4. install all the stuff that bolts/clips to the chrome....
Step 4. install the inner rub strip
Step 5. install the glass

I've been watching Chris' videos, they are majorly helpful. I just didn't know if the later models assembled in a different order.

Sounds like a good order. Yeah I noticed that the regulator arm and vent window intermingled somewhat oddly.

oh, and use a little WD-40 on the inner rub strip where you have to slide it behind the vent window, it will move easier, THEN snug down the vent bolt holding the vent to the door.
