okay so im not completely new to the bug world because i had a 68 last summer, bought it rusted out, stock, not running for $600...
got it running
stripped the interior
narrowed the beam 4"
air shocks up front
2 1/2 drop spindles
lowered the rear a couple clicks
sold it, its summer time again so decided to buy another
spent a little more this time
bought myself a 67
this one was already done, but plan on throwing my own personal touches too it
SO NOW FOR THE QUESTIONS:
1. i dont have a gas tank door...was it just shaved or is that how its supposed to be?
2. the hood doesnt want to open that well, is it really supposed to take 2 people to open it?! |

yes, stock until 67
no, it should pop and allow you to walk around and open it
you'll want to play with the alignment of the hood and the mechanism, but be careful, if you cant get it open, you can't put gas in it |

| I'd ditch the -'66 fenders, and get yourself some '67 only fenders. Best looking fenders imo. Nice otherwise. You don't see hawaiin rubber too often. |

| What's the real difference between the -66 and the 67 fenders? |

You're assuming the op is in the US. Euro 67's came with earlier headlights.
As for the white rubber seals, there is a good reason you don't see it often.

US spec '67's had flat headlights like your old '68. '67 fenders are a one year only fender.

Yes. US-spec '67 front fenders don't have the long narrow slots for the front bumper brackets like those on your '68 did. The '67's front bumper brackets fasten through the front apron, so those slots in the fender were not needed. When the larger, higher-mounted bumpers were started for the '68 model year, the mounts had to be relocated correspondingly higher on the body. No more room for opening the hood if the mounts would've been kept through the apron.
I "think" the front blinkers on top of the fenders were the same units and in the same positions from '67 to '68... |

And '69 as well. However '68/'69 turnsignals are a different style [same size and shape] than the '64 to '67 turnsignals. In '70 they went to the larger turnsignal [in the US at least]

I have another question that I'm sure one of you guys can answer...
My beam is narrowed 6" but I have 1" spacer on each side...that's how I got it. The headlight wells are hammered in to give a little more clearance.
I want to take off the spacers and run it at 6"...what all do I need to do to get the clearance to drive?
I'd like to see some pictures of what people have done to the headlight wells
As well as the other stuff I need to do to run a 6" narrows beam if anything
Thanks again! |

what tire size are those? 135 or 125 temps? At 6 inch and 135 on my 67, i tend to rub the inside wheel wheel on hard turns (but not the headlight buckets), 6 inches is getting to the extreme side. You can try to lift it up some but not sure if that's the way you want to go, I've heard of people shaving some off the buckets.
camber not adjusted. I also believe that the beam was at the highest adjustment point with 2.5 drop spindle in this picture.
also looked like your PO converted from long to short axle in the rear. sweet. |

I just PM'd you before I saw you commented on this. Weird.
But yeah they are 135s, and they hit even the hammered in headlights buckets...it might be cause mine aren't 67 fenders?
Are you rubbing on the front of the tire or the back? (like the headlight side or the door side?)
You can tell just from the picture my axles were swapped to the shorter ones?! |

i'm rubbing the door side, then again, when i swapped to the narrow beam, the pitman arm was not dead centered when i was adjusting the tierod/toe in, so it could be due to that.
Pretty sure those are short axles man, the wheel would be sitting closer to the fender if you were running long axle, i could be wrong, measure the end casting, if it's 3 1/4 (1/2 maybe) it's short. you should be able to runs up to 7's wide and slim profile tires. gonna look schweet.
this is more characteristic of long axles. I truely apologize for the bird shit. also before i installed 6 narrow beam.
I see tons of threads of guys who own a long axle car and wondering why they can't slam them like the early boys. in that picture, the tires were 165 and you can slam it like that, but you only have about 1/2 inch clearance from tire to fender lip. |
