View original topic: newbie here needing help with motor ID and dipstick length

I finnaly got my first VW its a 1973 squareback. I was told it has a bus motor in it. I was wondering if someone could tell me what year and maybe how much HP it is. The only numbers I could find are CB064407. If those dont help let me know and I will look for more.
I also dont know if it had the right dip stick. When I first checked it the oil was way past the full line maybe less then halfway up the stick. I did an oil change and filled with 3.5 quarts and it was back up to the same spot. Am I putting in too much or may the dipstick be the wrong one?

Thanks for the replys

well, according to the muir book your engine would be a type2 from 1972, as the T2 '73 engines started with the # CB0082876.

if you aren't changing the oil filter, you should only add 3.2 quarts of oil, according to the manual.

Where is the dipstick on your engine? On the back like a bus, or on top like a type 3?

I am not sure where the stock location is on either but on mine it is kinda right behind the rear bumper on the right side when looking from the back. Not that easy to get to.

Any idea how many HP this motor had when new?

How much oil should I add if I am changeing the filter? What would be a reason for not changeing the filter?

Thanks for the quick replys

hey.
i think your engine, a 1700cc, had about 66hp right off the line. as far as adding the oil, i think its 3 quarts in a type4. as far as changing the filter goes, you should do it everytime you change the oil. a new filter is like $5 or something like that, and since the oil is so damn important in an air cooled engine its worth the money. hope that helps.

Thanks thats what i thought about the filter. I couldn't think of a reason not to change it.

Geez a wooping 66 hp. I am going to have to do somthing about that.

Thanks for all the help

Again, according to the manual, engine oil cpapcity (with filter change) 3.7 U.S. quarts (3.5 liters)

That's 3.5 with the filter just to be clear. Be sure to put some of the oil in the filter and always go by the dipstick because you can easily overfill and the excess crankcase pressure will cause leaks.

This is a great reference for engine codes: http://www.tunacan.net/t4/reference/case.htm.

I measured the bus dipstick last year.
