Hello... and welcome to TheSamba. :D
Have a look at these two Gallery searches below, the first is from hazetguy's Gallery, and it shows what you're dealing with in the case itself. (Only the first four photo's):

This second link, from TS member cdennisg, shows a very nice way to simplify the task that you are referring to here.
cdennisg wrote: This is what I use for the top engine bolt on the driver's side of type 1 based engines. To remove the standard style hex head bolt, I replace the 6mm allen head socket with a 17mm six-point. But I always replace that bolt with a socket head cap screw. It makes engine R&R much easier. The stack of extensions puts the ratchet handle just below the tranny horn on the driver's side. That black section is a universal joint, wrapped in tape to stiffen it a little. I also have one of those allen head sockets in my traveling tool kit, just in case. This could also work as a theft deterrent, I suppose.

I hope this helps man, and once again.... welcome. |

Fres - no?
Fres - Yes!
anyhoo, that tranny and engine were not installed together in the same car at the factory. the usual mismatch.
In that situation I've used a couple fat washers, notched them with my grinding wheel to fit into the V in the tranny. Then I can fit the regular hex head bolt on there.
You can glue them to the tranny case with your favorite glue or bubblegum or silicon if it makes you happy. |

Fres .. YES !!! .... I like that
I've used the washer idea quite a few times Clara .... That works pretty well in most cases with the mis-match thing
The allenhead bolt is very cool though also 8) I think I like that way the best so far ... Gonna keep a few on hand from now on
Although adding the bubblegum in the fix would probably be more proper with the john muir line of thinking/macgyver for that fix imo ..... LOL  |

Yet we use it with our type 4 cooler adapted dog house shroud!
Install engine, put on the washer and nut. Then install the exhaust tube and shell from the cooler. |
