loss of 'pep' .. my beetle used to have so much pep in it.. it had power.. would actully throw you back in the seat if you gave it gas.. now it hardly moves.u give it gas and it bogs down.. can hardly get it moving.. let alone go up a hill.. i will have to downshift.. and cannot power up the hill even when its floored.. top speed is about 75 floored.. whereas i had it up over 100 a couple months ago.. "complete extractor and daul carbs" now i changed the exhaust and went to tune my carbs.. i notice.. the idle only changes when i adjust the mixture on one of them.. and the other i can turn all the way in and all the way out and it has no effect! i mean.. i want my heater boxes this winter.. but.. i have never really tinkered too much with the guts of a carb.. am i looking at something difficult here? if i have time to fix it, it will be only 1 day.
i am guessing this is one of the jets? i had trouble with this carb before, it was backfiring through the carb and had fuel and gunk all over it. so i sprayed some carb cleaner in both of them, and things got better.. until now..
this is probably one of those simple things that i cannot find anything on and am making a big deal about..
well, if you guys can toss any thoughts in, i would be much obliged |

| Most everyone thinks its fuel related ...right off the bat! Have you looked at your points? plugs? and your timing? if all those are good look at your in line fuel filters if you have them.If that doesnt work I guess your back to tweaking your carbs! peace out |

That carb-cleaner in a spray can doesn't work. You spray it down the throats of the carb and it goes straight through to the intake. Is that cleaning your carb? To clean a carb you have to take it apart, soak it in real carb cleaner for a while, rinse it out, blow out all passages with compressed air, and reassemble.
Since you never said which carbs you had, can't help you. But, regardless of carb, first place I would look would be idle jets. Pull them out, clean them, blow out passage and reinstall. If it's still bogging, rev the motor up and hold your hand over the throats of the carb. Do it several times. This increases carbs internal vacuum, hopefully pulling any obstructions through. If all that fails, carb has to come off. Don't be afraid to do this yourself. It's not as difficult as you think. If you need blown up diagrams (for Weber or Dellorto) let me know and I'll scan them for you. |

| I think I know exactly what your problem is(lucky for you!),I had that exact same problem when I first bought my 69bug. my car was only getting 10mpg and was extremly slow and top speed was about 70 with no wind. when trying to solve my mileage problem I discovered that my distributor wasnt advancing, in other words it was broke, but I replaced my distributor and BAM!!! gave me twice the power at least. though didnt fix my mileage which turned out that my carb was shot. so anyway dont just check your timing at idle check to see if it full advances. |
