Late swingaxles used harder shims, earlier ones used a stack of paper gaskets. These days, the paper gaskets are all you can get, and they come in the gasket set.
The side gears - they usually last a pretty long time, but I've broken a couple of them, they crack on the side and get sloppy... I suspect my 62 bug needs one right now actually, as I can hear a "snick" sound when I take off from a stop as the fulcrum plates shift. Or at least, I suspect that's the issue, as that's what my Baja did when I had side gear issues on it many years ago. New side gears go in and out of availablity. I went and put brand new ones in my Baja when I put in a reman tranny a few years ago, along with new fulcrum plates, and may do so for my 62.
You can get side gears, fulcrum plates and the gasket set all here:

That's a loaded question, so hard to answer in a simple yes or no.
That's not the way VW would have you do it, as the #16 side cover houses the differential, carrier bearing and shims which sets the pre-load and backlash.
But if you had a lot of experience tearing them down and rebuilding them, you might get the cover and the axle tube and/or complete diff carrier with both axles as an assembly to come off if you knew what to take off where and more importantly what to hammer on  .
Although they are contained within the same casting and interrelated, you should consider the VW transaxle as two separate units, one is the transmission, and the other is the final drive with axles. A good service manual and basic understanding of the two is highly recommended if you are going to attempt repairs to either.
More to the point, what exactly do you need to address? |

| I put a swing arm trans in my 66 bus. It did not come with the differential. I used the one out of my other transmission and all was well. However after about a thousand miles the bus just stopped rolling (after a minor clunk in the rear). So I wanted to pop the axle and take a look at the differential. The problem is I do not have a 300 dollar rear wheel bearing puller and after breaking both of the fingers on mine trying to grab the inner race I was hoping I could take the whole axle/tube assy off and use my press to push the axle out of the tube. I did not want to have to pull the engine and raise the transmission, but it looks like that is what I gotta do. I was hoping that if I pulled the cover plate the c clip would not have to be popped (since I cant get to it until I get the damn tube to slide off, which I cant do because the bearing is like stuck big time). Such is life eh? |
