  View original topic: Cylinder tin mods with big Intake manifolds

I've heard how important these deflectors are from Awesome Powdercoat, he even makes them to install in aftermarket cylinder tin.



My question is for those of you that have big a@#$ Intake manifolds like me, have you been able to incorporate these deflectors into the tin somehow? I don't see any room to do so and mounting them in a different spot than originally designed probably isn't a good idea.

If you trim carefully you can fit large manifolds and not cut the deflector.

Ive never had to trim any where neer thatmuch off my tin, but some streaching is in order.along with forming the tin over the exhaust port fins to move the tin closer to the case., or just a slice& let the intakes push the tin asfar as it needs to go &let it seal to the intake.I also like to seal any big gaps in that area.(and any where else)

I've never had to cut much tin at all around the intake ports, but as mark pointed out, you do need to shape the tin towards the cylinder head as much as possible. I did the shaping on the tin (posted below) with the tin installed on the engine, then I removed the tin and hammered it flat with a dolly. I ended up cutting, fitting, and plug welding the deflectors to some aftermarket head tin after I shaped the head tin and fitted the manifolds, which made things easy. Also, you may be able to do a little grinding on your intake manifolds (depending on what brand and how big they actually are). As for the velocity ring, I wouldn't worry about it too much as there are plenty of cool running hi-po VW's not running that ring. I did weld a factory velocity ring onto my shroud however (peer pressure! :lol: ).

These are CB Big Beef manifolds (straight, not offset). I wouldn't use these particular manifolds again had I known about the other issues I'd have later on with the clearances between the body and carbs. You can see how much material I removed with the grinder.

I just hacksawed a whole bunch of fat off a set of big beefs, still left them 1/8 inch bigger than factory flange size. Lots of fat to trim

I figure if I angle mill the head side a little and offset the 40 idfs inwards on the manifolds(40mm carb on a big hole, there's some wiggle room there), I can weasel them into the engine compartment of my 60'.
It is worth it

You know as I'm sitting here making my own industrial shields to fit around my header I noticed that by the time I'm done installing ALL the cooling tin the cylinders and heads will be completely enclosed. So as I work in the HVAC industry this set off an alarm in my head....where the heck does the air go?? If I'm blowing all this air into a closed box all it's gonna do is cause back pressure on the fan possibly making it work harder and robbing HP, no?
Either that or it will force more air through the oil cooler which might not be a bad thing but this whole set up kind of seems odd to me, thoughts?

Oh, I don't have all my tin pieces yet, so those little lower rear air deflector tins don't cover the sled opening completely-now I see
