If you are looking for the "correct" cloth for the car and are doing a 100% ORIGINAL restoration then go here for the fabric, this is the BEST company in the world for pre 1960 VW.

the easiest way to tell on the front seat are where the seat back rest on the seat bottom. The end of your seat bottom where it becomes the stop should be one piece and bent foreward and flat. Later seats have the swivel adjuster there.

just in case you wonder abou the rear seat are also different from post 55 seats also. The botom will have a hump that rest on the pan tunel. The back will have tabs on the end that swivel where you bolt 2 bolts per side. Newer one just have a single hole and no swivel and the bottom sits on a rail that you bolt separately to the car.

An important difference between early and late seat frames is the seat back angle. The early seat tracks were flat on the floor, while later seat tracks were sloped. The early and late seats will interchange, but the seatback angle will be wrong.

To check, put the seat flat on a level floor and look at the seatback angle in the various positions. I once had a late car with early seats and you could only drive it with the seatback in the most reclined position.
