I need one of these for my 66. And from the VIN I believe it to be an early 66 (not 66 1/2) VIN 116 804 370.

Does anyone know somewhere that may have these in stock?
Thank You!

Could someone please verify that my VIN posted above is in fact an early and not late 66 as there are 2 different springs and I would like to mkae sure that I order the correct one. Thanks!

There is the Progressive Refinements reference here on TS that you could do the research on to find out the exact VIN they made the change at...
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/progressive_refinements/index.php
I only have one example, that's my current '66 with VIN 116808XXX and it has the cast version, but I can't say for a fact that it's original to the car.
However, if you know what you have in hand, you can tell early '66 from late '66 pedal assembly's easily enough by their appearance.

All older Beetles and the early '66's up to that reported VIN have cast or forged one piece pedals and arms. The foot pads have a waffle pattern cast into them that look like a meat tenderizer. If the rubber pads are missing they still have an anti-slip feature built in.

Later types are formed from thick flat steel and tubing, with several parts stamped out on a press and made up into a welded assembly. They have a flat sheet metal face on the foot pedals. Without the rubber pads they have little anti-slip feature.

Hope this clears up your issue.

OK, so mine is def the early model as it has the waffle pattern on the pedal. But everywhere I look either doesn't specify early vs late or is out of stock on the early. Anyone know where to get an early one? Or would any of these be the correct ones?

All your links show the correct "early" spring. On this type the spring is longer with a bigger radius loop because it goes all the way around and hooks onto the brake lever itself.

The late one pictured in the first link is shorter with a tighter bend because they hook to the M/C push-rod pivot pin.

On both types the spring short leg is trapped against the floorpan when the pedal ass'y is installed and the loop connected after it is all tightened down.

Ok guys, I got the spring from a classified ad here on The Samba. But now after further inspection I have decided to rebuild the entire assembly. While looking for accelerator repair kits, I have come across an issue. My bug is clearly a early 66 and the spring I ordered is correct, but when I look at the repair kits I see the later one has the little black roller included which is on the back of my accelerator, while the early one does not. Please see below and if someone could explain to me which one I need to order, I would be very thankful.

Early

Late

Just went and looked at mine, we have the same ones I'm pretty sure. You should order the later type kit with the roller.

The earlier version pedals would have a loop on the end of their accelerator cable to accommodate that linkage bar shown in your photo, so pretty easy to distinguish the two.

Your accelerator cable should have a Z-bend in the end that fits into a hole in the lever at the pedals, a much improved system BTW.
