Need some help.
I have an 82 Westy Vanagon with California engine. My dash lights stay dim when key is off. Also, fuel pump relay runs after key shut off.
I bought it with rebuilt engine and new transmission uninstalled, so I do not know what was happening before I got it. Previous owner said that as far as he knew, electrical was fine (he's an honest guy).
Any suggestions? |

Exactly which dash lights stay on with the key off?

| I have dim alt/ oil light. Tried another ignition switch, same. Pulled all the relays- same. Found some loose, tired grounds behind the fuse panel and repaired- same. |

Update: with the fuel pump relay, ignition switch, altenator, AND the ecu disconnected- theres still "rouge" 4volts showing on the lead into the + side of the coil from the connection box by the left taillight. this is what keeps the fuel pump relay going and the dash lites on dim. It charges, has oil pressure, and runs great.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks! |

First, on the top left of the dash cluster is the warning lite for the parking brake. Pull the multi wiring connector off the back of the warning light module and see if that helps.
If the above doesn't help, pull fuse 11 and then fuse 12 to see if either of those help.

Update:
Yesterday, unplugged the brake warning lite and no change, but then went through the fuses and the last fuse took out the dim warning lites-= and the fuel pump relay shuts down after it's run. I think the fuse is for the horn and back up lights. Is there a horn relay or ?? in that circuit.
Any suggestions? |

The problem is solved when the last fuse is removed, however...
The problem is that now I do not have back-up lights and a horn. I don't care much about horn, but I need back-up lights.
Could I have a short in back-up lights or horn?
Thanks! |

| eliminate the horn by disconnecting the wires. No change? pull wires from reverse light switch on transmission.Test again. |

| All ghosty-like things having to do with the electrical system could very well have to do with the ignition switch. I had headlights that wouldn't turn off. Cause: Faulty ignition switch. |
