First off, hello. I just recently pulled my wifes first car out of her parents barn, bc they are moving. I had a rabbit myself back in high school but it was awful. Let me say this car is pink, and not in a good way. however, the more it sits in my garage the more I am becoming mesmerized with this ugly pink car. My plan is to finish what my father in law started about 5 yrs ago. He rebuilt the motor, new autostick tranny, new brakes, struts, shocks, generator, carburetor, and distributor. Ity has yet to run in those 5 yrs. I will try to get her running and then get the inteior back to usable condition, then give her a proper paint job. I have enjoyed reading all the build threads and will try to post some pics and keep it updated.

heres some photos:

so far i had it running last week, but it would only run by pumping the accelerator pump. I took the carb off and cleaned everything out twice with hoppes number 9, but when I put it back on and let it run the atf line blew out. I have since found a place that could reuse my fitting and made a new hose for me. I will get some gas tomorrow and try to start her up again. http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/medium/921382.jpghttp://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/medium/921383.jpghttp://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/medium/921387.jpg

bking747 Mon Apr 30, 2012 6:56 pm

alright,

got home tonight put no ethanol 90 octane in her, have cleaned the carb, checked the timing with a timing light, and still no idle. I have to keep pumping the throttle to keep it going what gives? Am i missing something. it has an 009 with pertronix ignition and a 34pict.

If its been sitting for a while pull the idle jet out on the RHS of the carb under the choke, make sure there is no crud caught in it.

Don't over tighten it when you put it back in either.

Did I read that right, you're using gun cleaning solvent on it? That's awesome!

did you put new plugs in? when you hit the throttle is it smooth. it basically sounds like the carb is out of adjustment or there is an air leak in the intake or carb sucking in too much air.

bking747 Tue May 01, 2012 9:30 am

It revs very smoothly, but even if I rev it to 2000 rpm or so and hold the throttle position it wants to die. I will take the carb off and clean it again. on the rhs is the idle jet underneath a brass plug, to the left of the pilot jet? I didnt take that jet out, I wasnt sure it came out so I didnt risk galling it.

Idle jet has a hex head on it w/ what looks like a check ball inside a hole in the middle.

i took the carb back off and cleaned it again. Don't know exactly what i did but it did the trick. it idles pretty good now. tonight i will get the service manual out and try to set the volume control and bypass settings.
