View original topic: Wheels turn in neutral

In the years I have worked on vws I have never started one while on jackstands. The rear wheels turn while it is in neutral. They are easily stopped by hand with little pressere. When the clutch is pushed down, they stop spinning. Is this normal or do I have an issue? I just replaced the throwout bearing.

they have always turned in neutral when in the air for me.

Normal.

I've always thought that was a result of churning of the gear oil by the input shaft giving some force to the r&p; but then I am not a transmission expert.

As long as it is normal. I was worrying.

Close. There is the input shaft and output shaft that both have gears on them. With input shaft turning the thick gear oil will cause the output shaft to turn.

This can even move the VW forward on level ground in neutral in cold weather.

Same theory applies to a manual transmission basically. Try shifting into 2nd gear without letting the vehicle warm up at all when its 10 degrees outside. Grabbing 2nd gear will be a bitch until the gear oil is warmed up. I always had to get it going just enough in 1st gear, then shift to 2nd. Waiting to shift at the normal point of 25 to 30, it wouldnt go in. All my vw's were purchased in north dakota in the air force at minot afb

True. On a very cold morning I had to keep my foot on the clutch about 5 minutes until the gear oil thawed or something.. The gearbox was making horrible noises in neutral. It was about minus 20 F. Utah in January. Gotta love that optima battery.

We put maybe 20k more miles on the bus and the tranny seemed fine. Fwiw.

x3 :D

I just witnessed this same phenomenon last weekend(?), maybe two ago...

Once I fixed the transmission, both wheels did the same as you describe here. All is well some 500mi+/- later... I just got home from a semi-local show with NO problems at all. And it did just the same as your's does now.

Hope you have the same results bro....

Fwiw, try it with the clutch pedal in; it shouldn't spin then. If it does then your pilot bearing is snatching.
