View original topic: In Moab, heading to Durango, need Catalytic Converter
Ethan5150 Sun Apr 29, 2012 1:07 pm

Well our catalytic converter just bit it. The rust finally won and ate completely through the cat. I had to pull my muffler off and attach it to our bike rack so it wouldn't just break off the hanger. I don't suppose anyone has an old cat they want to get rid of. It's for a 84 WBX (1.9) For the moment I'm not concerned with the guts of it, I just need the structural integrity of it to hold my muffler on. For now, I'm sure I'm annoying the town of Moab with my V8 diesel-sounding WBX.

Got two, actually. One has the larger flange on the muffler side. If you want to pay the postage I'll send one out tomorrow (Monday), from Illinois.

Ethan5150 Sun Apr 29, 2012 1:44 pm

Hmm, best I can tell both sides appear to be the same (2") with a 3 bolt triangular pattern. I may have a lead on one here in Moab but will know for sure in a couple hours. I'll plan to get back to you in a bit - thanks so much for your offer Skip! You'll hear from me soon! :D

I just bought a brand new direct fit from O'reilly's auto parts made my magna flow for $106. Bolted right up with bung for the 02 sensor. There is an O'reilly's in Moab on the main drag I believe.

PM sent.

I had to buy one fro Summit last time I need it one and it was pricier. Whats the part number o the one from O'Reilly's?

Mundopacheco Sun Apr 29, 2012 8:30 pm

Ethan, I live in Durango. Give me a call when you get it. I have lots of parts. Don't know if I have a cat. I'll be in my shop in the morning and will check. If not, I have some resources. I PM'd you my contact info.

Ethan,

I received your PM and it was time-stamped 22 minutes prior to davevickery's post regarding O'Reilly's in Moab and the $106 option.

I can still send it tomorrow, but if you get this post (you mentioned that you may be out of "internet range") please confirm. Do you want it overnighted?

Please advise.

I don't have my receipt with me but it must have been this one.
http://www.amazon.com/Magnaflow-22918-Catalytic-Converter-compliant/dp/accessories/B000JKJD4K Only $90 here.

And the 02 sensor was a lot cheaper than I expected, 61.99 OE Bosch with the correct leads on the end, no splicing.

OK, I'm ready to help Ethan out with a used Cat, but before I send it (and Ethan is out of internet range for a few days) I want to make sure others, more geographically proximate volks, are not able to more easily help this "cat-less cat".

So, Mundopacheco did you find a cat amongst your parts?

msewalson, any luck with your PM?

I wonder if Ethan had any luck at the O'Reilly's on the main drag south of downtown Moab?

In any case, if I don't hear from Ethan or any of you, I'll send the following out tomorrow. I had to cut it out/away from a bad manifold, but the screen in the cat looks good:

Anyone catch the new ignition switch behind the Makita?

In a pinch, you can remove the cat completely, then slide the muffler to the left and mate it to where the cat was. At least on the later models you can, not sure if the 84 exhaust is the same. I have done this to overcome a clogged cat while on the road, that was on a 1988 model (Syncro).

I spent the day at my shop, but didn't look as I never got a response here. I'll look tomorrow and make some calls........

Hey everyone - thanks for all your help. I'm just barely in cell range but I'm definitely still interested in getting a used one shipped to Durango (or meeting someone there). I literally don't have the money to buy one from a flaps or Van Cafe, we have enough gas and cash to make it to Durango and pay for shipping of the cat (I'm assuming < $30). So if someone can ship one with the same size flanges that would be optimal. Again, I really appreciate all the help here - you folks are all amazing!

Also, thanks for the idea of bolting the muffler right to the O2 pipe, I may give that a try for now.

Thanks again everyone, we couldn't do this trip without all your support!

Mundopacheco Tue May 01, 2012 11:32 am

Worse case scenario, I have a good running 1.9 we can pull the cat off of and maybe I can get one back somehow......

Mundopacheco Tue May 01, 2012 11:43 am

Ok, so I now have the mentioned 1.9 cat I can pull off my running 1.9, one for a 2.1 and one that a friend has, but is unknown as to whether it is a 1.9 or 2.1.....either way, I think we can do something that will get you on the road. One final option is just a straight pipe to get you home. There's a shop here that will do that....

Mundopacheco (and Ethan),

I just mailed my 1.9L cat to Ethan (2 day delivery) via USPS for Thursday arrival at his place in Durango. So, it looks like Ethan's covered. He may need a couple of gaskets, however.

Parting it forward for the Karma.

Ethan5150 Thu May 03, 2012 3:34 pm

You guys are amazing! Skip, thank you so much! I'll get you paid this weekend, early next week at the latest (as soon as I'm back in broadband land in Durango). Thanks again, the ears of everyone around us thank you!

Skip Laubach Tue Jun 26, 2012 6:38 pm

Well, so much for the Karma...I sent Ethan my spare cat and now I could sure use it. My new Bosal bit the dust today at the distal end (next to the muffler). It had only 500 miles on it.

I called BusDepot and they are sending a new one right out (mucho kudos). They said that they have never heard of this happening (how about any of yous?)

Anyway, I still feel good that I could help Ethan out when he needed it.

Still beta-testing the new install of the 2200 cc guts (GoWesty kit) into a 1.9L case (so far so good - details in another post soon).

JUST AN FYI. Small Car in Durango can help you with just about anything and there is a junkyard just outside of Durango towards Bayfield that has a van or two that you could scavange some parts from if needed.
