View original topic: Any interest in molds for body repair?
surfnc Sun Apr 29, 2012 5:08 pm

I have had a few people ask me about making small molds to repair broken or missing areas of their buggy bodies. I have a complete Manx body the I could take small area molds off of to help others repair their buggy. (I have no intention to do a mold of any complete part like the body, dash, side pod)

They would be like this one.

To repair this area.

Here is the thread I did to show how to repair the missing area:

Let me know what you think.

Would you be willing to do a battery box and spare tire well? The bottoms of mine were hacked up pretty good to make room for the IRS chassis.

I think that would be a great idea.
A lot of people have buggies with the license plate area
cut out Or a fender busted.
I don't need anything myself right now, but I would like to think
if I ever did need something there would be someone with a mold
so a repair could be made.
I don't know why someone hasn't done this already.
So I think it would be a great idea Vince. :D

rear seat/package tray area, fuel cap area (when the cap has been moved from left ftont to another area.) I'd be really interested in those two.

Great idea! A dash repair splash would also be quite useful.

Great idea Vince... but one comment - wouldn't the splashed part that you make be larger than the original, since you're laying it up over a '1-to-1' scale body... ?

Would it be better to make a full splash mold of the front of the buggy, and then lay-up the repair part off of the underside of the splash mold? (I guess that this repair part would be a 'male' part?)

Q-Dog,
PM sent!

Moon Buggy
Thanks, I would like to help get as many Manx (Dune Buggies) back on the road as possible. Maybe get them to the MOTB!

Axitech,

manxbuggy,
The dash may be more of a problem since most are ABS and harder, but not impossible to repair. They also had a "grain" pattern that would be hard to match.

Bryan,
Thanks, I would send the mold out to the person who ordered it. They would then lay up the part using my mold to make the missing part on their buggy. That would be easier than trying to splice a part I made into their buggy.

**Sorry for the confusion. It is explained in the attached thread. I need to add these pictures to have it make better sense.**

Area being repaired with mold on top.

Area with mold removed after fiberglass lay-up.

PERFECT! I just spent time Sunday afternoon making a splash mold of a tail light area for a '73-up tail light... spray glue, shipping plastic wrap, and fiberglass are my friend.

I'd like to see you splash a mold of the camping pod.

I need molds for right and left inner tubs . rear tires worn through, it was like this when i bought my buggy, so this is my worst repair, the sides of my buggy are thin, i plan on laying in more glass for those

i also wonder if somebody has custom dash pods available, would be nice for an alternate

I would be interested in the rear license plate area. Ours is cut out above the upper body line.

Thanks, it has saved me a lot of time.

I would love to make a camping pod. I would just need one to copy. I may be able to fab something up that would be close. I just need to find some time. (soon hopefully)

rammintwins
PM me with some pictures of the damaged areas and I can give you an idea of what it would be.

Pictures help so I can know how far to extend the mold. I also use "points" contours to index the mold to make it easier to position on the damaged body.
