In the late 70's I drove a 73 Thing. In LA they stole the driver's side door. Couple months later, they stole another door and all 4 side curtains. A few months after that, they stole the entire top frame and vert top. Then I move to Chicago. Gas heater stolen within weeks. Car stolen twice within two years. 181's parked on city streets are not a good idea.

Oh, and if anyone here was involved in any of that action . . . a giant thank-you-- I made insurance money on every single deal. At the time I really appreciated those Allstate checks.

This was not mine but a bunch of years i was at the Miramar Air Show in San Diego. As I was heading from parking to the air show I spotted a nice looking Baja at the on base Lemon Lot . When I left the air show on the way to my car I went by the baja and the engine was gone. What were people thinking as they walked past the car while people were taking the engine. Hmmmm some last minute auto repairs.

But the strangest thing I had stolen from me was a prosthetic leg. This was in the early 70's and I was kinda shy so I kept this leg in the back seat of my 59 bug for a conversation piece. It helped. It was a great loss.

Not mine, but my brother's neighbor had a VW bug. Actually, TWO neighbors had VW bugs. One worked fine, the other didn't for weeks because it was missing a starter (old unit was taken out and determined to be not rebuildable, so the car sat).

One morning "working VW owner" comes out, turns the key... nothing. Tow company comes over, looks at it, under it, and says very annoyedly, "Lady, what are you trying to pull, your friggin' starter is missing!!"

Turns out the other neighbor stole the starter out of her car! His started fine that day, of course, and when he came home the cops greeted him.

Hmmm, I leave my keys in my cars here at home. I haven't had a car bothered since I moved here.

Not my car but back in high school my friend bought a nice 61 hardtop for 400 bucks and also had a 68 bug with a 1776. We took the motor out the 68 to put in the 61 and that night someone stole the 68 that was parked in front of the house with no motor!!!

Some of the things that I remember

Go cart and bike stolen out of my garage when I was a kid.
My amp out of my bug when I ran in the house for no more than 5 min.
My stereo face and my friends stereo who was parked next to me...they left his stereo face in my car...nice touch.
Most recently my daughters bike...at 12 noon at her friends house.
Bought her a new bike and it got stolen 1 week later...
and most current ....twice in two weeks Ive had my lunch stolen at work.

Im sure Ive had more stolen, just cant think of it now

Not from a VW but it was weird. I was living in Corpus Christi on North Beach (low rent area at the time) and driving an old rust bucket Torino station wagon. Car cost me $50. Came out one morning and headed for work. Car bounced like crazy the entire 30 min trip to work. Come to find out the nasty rusty shocks were gone.

Only thing I ever lost from a VW was the windshield wipers from one in Cali while I was a Marine. The one day it actually rained and here I am with no wipers!

Actually, it is quite funny. At the time I was driving a '70 ghia vert that was not in the best of shape. I had one of those cheap 5 bank equalizers mounted in place of the ashtray (perfect fit). Well, as with most things in a vert, it got wet over the years and one of the channels had stopped working.

One morning bright and early, I parked my car at the University Square Mall (Tampa, FL) and rode my bike to campus (USF) as I was too cheap to pay for a parking hangtag that semester.

They squezed their long skinny finger(s) in, lifted the lock, and stole a 6 year old, nonworking, and pretty much worthless 5 chanel equalizer. Dumbasses.

At least they didn't cut a hole in the roof. I figured they saved me about 5-10 minutes of junk removal and disposal. I still wonder how long it took them to figure out it was just a piece of junk.

I just reinstalled the ashtray and kept on motoring.

He wore the flip up Izod shirts and all that. We taught him a lesson by stealing his poorly installed Cobra car alarm! Must of been funny as hell when he came out to his car to find it had been broken into and the only thing we took was the thing that was supposed to protect it!

You should have installed it correctly but dissabled the remote feature. That would have been a neat scene.

my whole house got robbed once, it sucked, they took things like bottles of change but left over $100,000 of guns, and totally missed a stash of over 10gs in cash

I guess they didnt want to escalate it to a gun crime, that or getted chased down like rabbits and...

turned out we knew who did it, some old scum bag friends

moral of the story, choose your friends wisely

How about taking some of that 10g and buy a good fire proof safe? They make them nice and large where you can store your gun collection as well. Even have finger print access for the need-for-speed gun access.

California Westy Tue Aug 19, 2008 12:16 pm

My 69 Westy and they took the sink and the original engine didn't touch anything else. They just pushed it out in the desert and left it.

Had 3 steros stolen over 3 years time.Ive had my backpack stolen with about 200 bucks worth of school books. Stupid thing is that I had my wallet in my backpack. Dont ask me why... I remember being so freking tired that night that I couldnt wait to get in the house and go to bed.

I had a ford probe stolen from my house early in the morning. I actually saw them in it and just as I ran out the front door they took off. I chased them down in another car and they abandoned it a couple of blocks away.
