Gentlemen... If I can pick you brains.

I am bringing a Brazilian T2 back to the road... The front section is Baywindow and the back half and all mechanicals are Splitwindow...

SO... the previous owner drained the steering box of oil. It is now rusty... internally. OK so we need a new box... pictures to start with...

So you can see it resembles a newer box but has the old one piece shaft that goes all the way to the steering wheel. It does not need a mounting bracket as it simply bolts onto the subframe... Internally it is a Worm and Roller. the only identifying marks are GEMMER 20-08-04 S (maybe 5?)...

Any info? alternatives?...

Cheers

Unless it's locked up, fill it with oil and roll with it.

Thanks Guys...

Below are some pictures of it. Looking at it a second time it looked better. (I had sprayed a little metal prep on it and the tried to buff the roller. Finally covering it with wd40.

The roller and screw are still pitted with bits of flaked rust adhereing to the worm. The needle bearings on the worm feel a little bit rough.

I was thinking it would need to be gleaming surfaces? Or am I being a perfectionist?

I'm interested in how this turned out, as I have a '79 brazilian bay and I want to fix the steering box.

BTW, I think there is a rebuild kit made in Argentina for like 100USD..

Hi,

In the end I managed to remove the steering shaft and roller. This allowed me to buff it with a wire wheel and a dremmel tool to remove the rust and scale. So after a darn good clean it was still pitted but worth reassembly.

After reassembly it was much better. It improved markedly when filled the box with a 50/50 mix of clean grease and boat gearbox oil (sae90 with some extra anti-corrosive agents)

It's now smooth and apparently precise. I will have to wait till the bus is rolling to find out.
