my friend just bought a 91 golf wolfsburg edition in mint condition for 900 $ off an old lady it is an automatic. is this a rare car i haven't seen many automatic golfs that are that old. the only problem we found was the red temp light flashes all the time but it runs fine.

Nah the 3 speed automatic was pretty common. Change your low coolant sensor in the tank and that should end the flashing.

is there anything about the 91 golf that i need to warn him about? I'm an air cooled guy so golfs aren't my thing

The automatics are a pig on gas compared to the standards and the seal between the differential and transmission components of the transaxle often fail.

Yeah, stay away from automatic transmissions....
During this era VW's auto's are pretty notorious for having weird problems.(probably why you think they are rare. They are all taking up space in junkyards)
Then again 900 bucks is a pretty good price. Even if the auto trans fails, there are plenty of manual cars around that you could swap all of the stuff over from. |
