So I have a notchback with the rear lid removed along with the springs that attach to the hinge. Any advice or tips on how to get the springs mounted?

I took a small pair of vice grips and clamped it around the tube once I compressed the spring by hand then you can just stick it on the decklid and release the vice grips. Done in 5 minutes.

This Type 3 Squareback Tailgate Hinges writeup uses the VW 709 tool, but you can use a big screwdriver.

With the trunk lid off, I just lifted up on the hinge mounting pad, and slipped the pin in place. They're pretty easy to do, compared to the other models that have torsion bars holding the lid up. If you need to get the springs in place, then you'll need to set the spring in place, and slip the pin in at the bottom first (add the retaining clip at tthat time), then just do like I said above. And the hinge bolts on with a shoulder bolt. I think it uses a 6mm allen wrench, IF I remember correctly.
