View original topic: Question about exhaust bolts

Unpacked the exhaust mounting kit I got from the Bus Depot and I'm looking at 14 bolts of 3 varying sizes. Six of them I know are for both sides of the cat, but of the remaining eight I have four that are approx. 1 3/8ths inch and four that are 1 1/4th inch.

It would also seem I'm missing four bolts- being that I'll need eight to connect the manifold to each cylinder's exhaust port and then an additional four to connect the Y-pipe. I can simply purchase those but I'd like to know where I'm supposed to use the longer of the two types of bolts and where I need to use the shorter.

(Sorry if I've over-elaborated.) Thank you.

Not entirely sure what you have, but IIRC there is the notion that for each exhaust on the head there is 1 bolt and 1 stud (which you use a nut with). This is so you can hang your header by the stud and then run a bolt into the remaining hole.

So... you don't have 2 bolts for each port. See if that works out in your pile of hardware.

Longer bolts are used where there is a donut steel gasket between sections. You need 6 long bolts. (A flat washer and copper nut on each)
That would be between the cast union (2 to 1) and J-pipe. And between the j-pipe and the cat.

The shorter bolts are used on the union (2 to 1) attaching to the two header pipes. 4 used here. (a flat washer and coper nut on each

Shorter bolts can also be used to attach tail pipe to muffler and muffler to cat. 6 more short bolts. (also flat washers and nuts between the muffler and cat and no nuts necessary on some mufflers to tail pipe)

Studs are used where the header pipe attachs to the head. 4 studs. (4 wavy washers and 4 nuts.)

Actually, I think slug's correct on the connection to heads, unless his 84 they did something different. Half should be studs, half should be bolts.
