| Hi my Name is Dustin, 31yo. Im located just outside of Nashville Tennessee. I have been in love with all things aircooled since i could stand up. I have a 1969 T2a. I acquired it about 4 years ago. It ran great, never saw any leaks, which is more than rare!, until one day i got trapped on I65 in traffic and pulled over to let it cool down while the traffic thinned. Shortly after i pulled over i was greeted by our loverly THP, and was questioned on my inentions of the use of the shoulder, and was told to get moving or face citation and possible impoundment of the bus. SO i set back off. Got home to a verry tired and weak little engine. so i thought id give he a refresh. I foungd that someone had cracked a corner of the block off at the oil punp cober and it was(suprisingly) held together by a helicoil and JB Weld! so i knew that i needed to source a new case..... here we are 3 years later. I have been looking this forum over for about a year now and decided to sign up. I have searched and searched the threads for one on putting a type4 into a T2 type2, possibly a write up on the install.... but after 602 threads, 433 ow which were swap specific, i am no further along than when i started...haha. However, it does seem that others have asked of this and were greeted only with dead end links, and ranting over why you should not do it, and what is better, and personal attacks.. With all that being said, id like to see if anyone on here can be of assistance to me in my quest for insite of performing this transplant. Thanks in advance, Dustin. |

| Change your subject line to maybe attract the correct pro's. I only opened the thread to welcome you to the forum (welcome). I have found that most people are more than happy to spread their knowledge. |

| Jake Raby makes a mustache bar for use in an early bay and a T-4 engine. You will have to hack up the rear engine tin to make room for the fan shroud. Then you will have to fabricate cooling tin from what pieces of sheet metal you can find. You will need the foam seal that seperates the engine tin from the frame. Although the T-4 is a much better engine than a T-1, if it is not cooled properly you will waste the motor and your $ |

You might study building an Oxyboxer out of a Vanagon Waterboxer core.

I am thinking of going that way on my Thing. |

Easiest way is to use the DMT fan setup and sell the type 4 fan and extra stuff.
Run dual carbs and a TIV exhaust so you have heat maybe fab in the sealing tin.
On the Shoptalkforums there should be tons of threads about this conversion. |

Hi - welcome. There are many threads here on the benefits and downfalls of each T1 and T4.
Having owned both, my suggestion would be that if this is to be used often stay with a T1 motor. The reason is the availability of parts. T4 motors do have more power and are stronger but parts are scarce and if you decide to travel with it and you have a major issue, you will be stranded. We are trying to decide whether to take our 1977 that is fully restored to NC on vacation from California. I did the trip many times in a 1971 DP and would do it again for sure in one but with the 1977 if something breaks - say I need a head. Well, I am pretty much going to spend my vacation waiting for parts or paying to flatbed it home. With a T1 you could buy 500 mile engines and probably trade your way across the USA - not with a T4 bus. We've considered on more than one occasion selling it and buying a 1971 DP to restore but I have yet to see a 1971 DP in a condition and price that would entice me. Use the money you save on the motor to do something else important in your life. |
