Hey Guys,

I'm wondering if there is a decent substitute for true distributor grease? I don't have any on me and my local FLAPS doesn't carry any. I want to drive the bus this weekend but I have a little birdie in the engine compartment that needs to shut up. I plan on ordering some of the Mallory 26015 sometime soon so this would only be a temporary thing.

Thanks for the help-

One idea is to find a shop that services old time cars and ask them for a dab of "good ole Bosch Distributor Grease".

When you get a chance, get a tube, it will be a lifetime supply.

almost any flaps will have a points grease. I have a small Standard Products Blue Streak tube that is 30 years old and still going. I also have a tube of Bosch Grease and it will last another 600 years. If you really can't find a small tube of points grease at NAPA or your FLAPS get some Sil Glyde and use a little of that for awhile.

I've used dielectric grease in the past. Recently I was sent a dab of Bosch grease which I shared with the VW guy at the flaps. Thanks to the donor from both of use.

A tube only lasts me a year or so.

I will give you mine as a your inheritance when I pass. I fear that 8 or 9 generations of Kent family members will come and go without another mechanic in the family. The rest of the family are smarter than I. They got rid of their VW's early in life.

When was the last time you actually tried to buy any, I don't think it has been stocked at our local FLAPS in a two decades, as it seems everyone else but Bosch sells their contact points with a little pill of grease. I am sure they could order something if I asked though.

I personally like the Delco grease better than the Bosch grease, as it's a little thicker in consistency.

I haven't tried NAPA yet but the other local store said, "Yeah we have that!", then gave me a packet of dielectric grease...

that will work. It is silicone grease.

It will work so long as it stays in place. One of the characteristics of a good distributor grease is that it will not be thrown off or ooze at the hottest temperature and highest rpm it will see. I wouldn't hesitate to use dielectric grease if I had nothing else available.

A 'Points replacement module' could resolve that  HeHeHe!
