What a great day! I've been working on rebuilding my 1600 dp engine for about 6 months. I got it re installed this evening...and it runs!!
Now the trouble...I Know nothing about adjusting the carb and distributor. It's a 34 pict 3...and a 009 dist. It starts now but barely idles. Is there a logical starting point.? Engine is a 73....all stock. Car is a 67
The carb has Been rebuilt by a local vw shop. Should I assume that he has set the jets to a baseline?
What is a good procedure.
I have the bug me videos and the Bentley manual. I didn't see a section pertaining to this subject.
Any help you guys are willing to give would be appreciated.
Thanks |

Congrats! Have you been here? http://www.vw-resource.com/34pict3.html#carb
Before you start tuning the carb make sure your ignition timing is set right. It should be around 30 degrees BTDC at 3000 rpm with a strobe timing light and around 5 to 10 degrees BTDC at idle. You adjust the ignition timing by hooking up a timing light/pointing the light at a mark on the crank pulley, loosening the 10 mm nut on the clamp that holds the distributor and rotating the whole distributor body. http://www.vw-resource.com/009_dizzy.html
Good luck and happy tinkering. ;) |

| Since you are using a 009, set the timming at 28 to 30 deg. max at 3,000 RPM, and don't worry what the timming is at idle. Then adjust idle on carb to 700 to 800 rpm. Untill it will idle without stalling. You can fine tune idle after a couple hundred miles on the engine to break it in. |
