Hello Im new to bay windows !picked it up wednesday the guy said it dident run and parked it two years ago! He thought it was electrical. When i got it home I found it had ben coverted to carberated and a vacume hose was in the wrong place I hooked it up to what I think is for the brake booster. Added gas and she fired up but she has low compression on # 1. I think maybe a valve issue from sitting so long! I saw some rust on the drip rail just behind the front roof rack and removed it! Im happy I did because the thing sits so tight in the drip rail it was holdind water and rusting the roof toward the back of it. Other than that the bus is solid and complete I love this thing and cant wait to go camping! Any advise you can give would be awsome!! Heres some pics! If anyone of you have a riviera I would love to see some pics I cant find many rivieras in the gallery

Thanks Mike

For $950 I'd say you stole that unit. Very nice.

Sweet looking bus!

'77 would have came from the factory with solid lifters, so no "clattering on revival" unless the valves were badly adjusted before being parked. Of course, '77 was a long time ago, and there is no way to know what is in there now without looking.

I see you have lots of posts on TheSamba, so excuse me if I mention stuff that you know well already. That said...

Adjust the valves and take the compression again. With a type IV engine, the usual suspect for poor compression is cylinder head and/or valve seat issues. If compression is still low, you need to try to determine if it is the valves or the rings letting compression by. Squirt some oil in the cylinder and try the check again. If compression increases, then it may be the rings. If not, it's somewhere in the valves.

You can do a leakdown test (search this forum for it) to help determine what valve may be causing the issue if the squirt of oil doesn't help much.

I would be glad to help you but you but we simply don't have anything to talk about. You have a Riviera and I have a Westy. They just don't have anything in common.

I also can't wait to see the thread on the wide 5 conversion.
