View original topic: unknown screw on top of the master cylinder

Hi,
I have a screw on top of my FTE master cylinder and I was wondering what its purpose is and if I can use it to bleed the MC.
The screw is located right over the outlet for the rear brake circuit, as you can see in this picture:

(stole this from the gallery, looks like the same MC)
Thanks
Karsten

I dont know what every year VW. master looks like but I will take a stab at its either a duel circuit master or its been a while but I recall the brake light switch screws in one of the ports. I think you could look at some of the vw. online parts places and find your style and figure it out pretty easy. Or i'm sure someone else will chime in that has the exact same one.

DO NOT...remove that screw unless you are taking the whole cylinder apart. That is a dual circuit master cylinder. That is teh stop screw for the inner circuit piston set. If you loosen it...it will allow the inner piston to pop outward. That will put the end of the stop screw dead in the middle of the groove for the outer most seal cup on the inner piston....or worse...right on the edge of the piston re-tightening the screw will destroy the cup and usually if it is on teh piston edge...destroy the piston.

When you are rebuilding a master cylinder..you first use a rod or wood dowel to push the inner piston set past that screw...then tighten the screw. This way the inner piston set is behind the screw. Then put in the outer piston set, the washer and snap ring.

It is not for bleeding. Ray
