I am going to buy a split bus and its vin number is a mystery for me cos it reads 226 063 706
It s supposed to be 1966 but when I checked vin tables couldn't find this 26 type?!! I asked the owner to confirm that it s 226 not 216 as it should be but he confirmed the number above?! Anyone could decipher this for me?!
Million thanks |

| It should not always be 21. It is a 1966 model 22 (microbus). Look in the "model" link at the top of the technical section VIN code page. |

The first 2 digits are the model # so substitute 22 for 21 in the tables.
At the top of the VIN tables there is an explanation.
22 is a valid model #.

22 = Standard Microbus. |

You missed the point of the explanations. The first two digits refer to model number. The table you used uses the default of "21..." for all buses.
Look again at the paragraph above the tables, and click on the link, "Models" that is highlighted in blue. It will take you to the model number reference page. |

Does yours not fall in between the number at the end of October and the end of November of 1965, making it a 1966?
1965
Sep 216 036 844 H0 040 045
Oct 216 052 244 H0 056 071
Nov 216 067 992 H0 071 688
Dec 216 083 207 H0 086 211
I THINK that's how it's read. As mentioned previously, you substitute the 21 prefix for a 22 if that's how yours' reads. |

Imagine that it read like this:
1965
Sep 226 036 844
Oct 226 052 244
Nov 226 067 992
Dec 226 083 207
Would that make more sense?
As mentioned previously, "22" is a "Standard" Microbus |

| Thank u very much zozo! But I still don't understand y is it that I don't see anything to suggest that 22 is the standard microbus?! And y there is no tables for standard buses and y all tables on the net r focusing only on 21 prefix not 22?! |

| The link that Everett posted above will show you the"22" explanation. As for why the tables are prefixed with the "21", I could only guess. Glad I could help otherwise. |

| Just pretend the VIN tables read "2x6" instead of 216. |

The text from the top of the VIN page ( http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/chassisdating.php ) I mentioned above:
Quote: Beginning in the 1965 model year (August 1964), the VIN/chassis number begins with the 2-digit model number, i.e. 21 for Panelvans, 23 for Kombis, etc.
Refer to Models ( http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/modelstype2.php ) for the numbers. The 3rd digit is the model year, i.e. 5 indicates 1965.

The tables are prefixed with 21 because that is the default and what is used in the VW books with VIN tables. |

| Thats cool!!! I have no idea what any of the numbers mean. What number if any tells me its a panel. Also it has a small 1500 on the back hatch. I have never seen one was that original? |
