View original topic: carb nut quick question

I'm having trouble tightening the rear nut that attaches my 30 pict carb to the sp manifold, front is fine but back is a PITA.
Whats the best tool to get in there?

Cheers!

By "rear" I suspect you mean front. (front of car)

Is a normal combination wrench too tight? It usually works OK for me.

Yes, the front one. I only have a small adjustable wrench which is driving me crazy and I need to invest in some more tools what size is that one in the pic?

How did you get on with your quest for a gas tank sender unit?

I read your posts and got a sender unit with the rubber seal from EIS Parts, It cracked when I screwed it the first time (looks like cheap crappy metal), but I managed to JB weld it up and works fine and rubber boot is good.

13mm

Yeah, get a 13mm combination wrench. You can pick up a pack of metric combo wrenches cheap at Harbor Freight, and I think Sears still sells no-name cheapo sets as well. I remember the first time I went to take a carb off, a LONG time ago, 1989, and I was trying without luck to get a socket on that same nut... then I saw the combo wrenches in the really cheap metric tool kit I had recently bought at Target... and my mind went "ding"

Ah, I do have some more stuff to add to that thread, maybe later this week. I never did actually try the EIS one due to the bunching-up of the rubber boot. Currently I'm trying a different 1960s Magura tank unit than I think I have before and have made some adjustments on the float arm so it hopefully will register better for that last gallon or so. Need to run the tank almost empty and see.

Cheers 66brm and glutamodo! Im in New Zeeland and we don't have sears but will go the local auto tool shop 'repco' or super cheap auto' and grab a set of combo wrenches...

glutamodo - the EIS unit was quite stiff when first installed and I was worried it did'nt give a correct reading but managed to loosen up and seems to read fine, its on my daily driver and I normally fill up when it hits the reserve line anyway.

One of these works great for that nut...

I have (and recommend) an S-shaped 13mm box wrench for that nut, very handy. I think there are also some special C-shaped box wrenches around like at Sears that are 1/2 and 9/16 as well.

I think Harbor Freight sells and inexpensive set of metric S-shapes.

1/2 is a 'tad' smaller than 13mm. Some 1/2 wrenches need some filing for a good fit. Box wrenches with 6 point instead of 12 point are better too.

I have one like that and never use it, it's harder to use for me that a normal 12-point wrench.

I do find it's easier to pop the distributor cap off in most cases so the cap and wires don't get in the way.

The C-shaped 1/2 inch box wrench fits back there nicely.

thx
