Tearing into one of 2 1835 engines I have had stored, and need some help/ advice. This engine ran well, but pulled the rockers to clean up some surface rust and I am not happy with what I've found. The rockers are VW castings, and the shaft seems set more towards the pushrod side leading me to think they are 1.25 ratio. 1:1 would have the shaft centered right? Here's where it gets weird, The shafts were shimmed off of the mounting pedestals with 1/8" thick washers. How do I go about putting this all back together so the valve train geometry is correct? It's also got the bugpack swivel adjusters, but the swivels haven't fallen out yet..
What's the first step? Proper shape and thickness(??) shims? Cut the pushrod tubes? A little help needed, much appreciated in advance!
Also, heads are stamped 0411013755, that's just a base model 39.9x32 valve right? What are the limitations of this head?

Looks like 1.1 stock rockers with ford swivels and solid shaft kit
It is normal to use .060-.080 spacers under the rockers when using those swivel adjusters |

| Thanks for the fast reply. Would the spacers be thick washers like in the picture, or square? I'm thinking/ worried that the washers might allow some flex at the mounting studs. Also, "ford" adjusters? Not heard of that, will have to do a search.. |

That is where they came from, from a ford courier, the porsche adjsuters come from porsches
the cheap ones come from china, unaware of their proud history
The washer in your pic looks like it has a big hole, that is odd, maybe that is all they had to use, that ain't ideal but it worked..... didn't it
I think those are probably the OLD 041 heads, yeah, 39 steel intakes and stock exhaust valves. They are ok for some things. |

| We have used thick washer before. Kinda redneck, but never had any issues with it. There is a better way I'm sure, but if all the washers mike out to be the same thickness you should be ok. The rockers only torque down to 18 ftlbs anyway. |
