View original topic: Shift rod bushing hanger?

My rail uses the back half of the VW pan welding to a tube frame. So I have part of a tunnel still. The shift rod is very short. I would guess 17" or less. First, do I really need to busing on such a short rod? If so how does the hanger remove? My trans has what I believe to be some bad synchronizers. Shifts well when cold or at low RPMs, but once hot or rev it out and shift it grinds. I just want to be 100% the lack of a shift rod bushing isn’t my issue. Being such a short rod I don’t think taking the time to install would add any benefit. Shift coupler is new.

After a little more searching I found you have to drill out weld. Also it seems the symptom of no bushing is hunting for gears. I really don't have any issues finding gears mainly because the rod is very short I would guess. Seems it’s not worth my time to try to put bushing back in. Shift is a little loose but it doesn't bug me.

Umm... How does the ball stay in the cup if you have no shift rod hanger? If you are using stock shifter concept the hanger is important because it supports rod and keeps if from dropping off the ball...

And yes a "good" shift rod bushing will improve shift quality immensely...

There is not substitute for having good bushing under shifter, good tight coupler and most likely adjustable end on shift rod for compensating for incorrectly cut and welded shift rod...

does/should the bushing go in the shift rod box if you have one?

No the hanger is still there, bushing is gone. I tried to remove shift rod but the previouse owner must have cut the rod and bubble gummed weld it back together thus it will not clear the hanger. Looks like a major pain to fix. With a new shift coupler it shifts decent. Shifter is a little sloppy but I have no issues finding gears other than the worn syncros.

Check the action on your clutch. I took some time to put a bushing in mine (didn't have one prior) and it didn't fix the grinding I had. I thought I needed synchros because it was mostly reverse, but first and second were a bear too. Turned out the armature on the clutch was just hung up from a weird wear pattern. Freed it up and it's been shifting like a dream. New bushing and coupling are def appreciated too though. Silky smooth now.
