| Hello im new to the aircooled world but i recently bought what i thought was an original 66 beetle from arizona its in great shape until recently it started to cough and hesitate when applying the throttle when its warm cold runs great the timing and valves were set and i also noticed it has a 30 pict 2 carb from what i gather shouldnt it have a 30 pict 1? Also when starting the car it doesnt even crank it just fires right up ive tried adjusting the carb but nothing. Also is the 30 pict 2 a good carb or should i get a 30 pict 1? |

What engine is in it? Not many of these old bugs have their original engine. And even if it is the factory block, is it still a 1300 inside? The 1966 version of the 30PICT-1 lacks a power fuel system and is best suited only for the 1300, however the 1967 version with the power fuel sytem on the 1500 is a good carb, one of the best VW ever made, and it is this version that has been cloned, more than once, in the aftermarket.
The 30PICT-2 has its drawbacks. I just talked about them in another thread tonight. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=511281 Also, I don't believe the 30PICT-2 ever got reissued in the aftermarket, but both the 30PICT-1 and the 30PICT-3 did, more than once. It's a reflection on the quality of the PICT-2's design that it never got reproduced. I will say that although I don't love that carb by any means, if the idle circuit is clear, they can run OK.

Anyway, you ought to check your accelerator pump output. If it gets plugged up and stops spraying as it should, that can cause the issues you are talking about. (By the way, when an engine does not accelerate smoothly when you open the throttle, it's commonly known as having a "flat spot")
Take your air cleaner off, and look in at the tube under the choke butterfly, when you open the throttle you should get a nice solid stream out of it (that is the accelerator pump's dump tube). This diagram is for later carbs, but it's similar:

| yes it still is the original 1300 i think im just gonna get a 30 pict 1 and be done with it |
