the largest auto plant on the planet was completed in south carolina in 09-- 1 billion dollar plant robotic vw production facility for the american market, begins to rival an old former aerospace plant some of us used to work at-- seems like robotics are levelling the labor playing field on this planet-- dont know what models they build there but its a big start-- they obviously feel north america is worth investing in...

Hi Todd,

VW's new US plant is actually in Chattanooga Tennessee. I think they looked at SC, but it didn't make the final cut. At present the only vehicle produced there is the new "large" Passat built specifically for the North American market. It's a really nice product from a design standpoint and the build quality is impressive.

And here's our Westy in front of that factory during a stop in Chattanooga during our trip last fall. The VW folks did not rush out to welcome us, but they had work to do.

You must be too young to remember the Westmoreland, Pa plant.

Give the OP another year or two and he'll discover the transparent VW factory in Dresden and announce it to the world.

I think we're all missing the most important issue. Does having a plant here in the States make VW a domestic car?

Obviously not.

Considering VW was the first foreign make to produce cars in the US in Westmoreland, PA in 1978, this is very old news.

I'm not interested unless they're building cars that drive at least the rear wheels and have a longitudinal drivetrain.
