If a US citizen inherits a vehicle owned by a German citizen, now deceased, what is the process after once being notified by the German courts.
I know a visit to Germany would be necessary, but what paperwork is needed to present to the court or whatever.
Anyone know the cost of shipping a 5000# auto from Bremerhaven, Germany to the US, preferably Savannah, GA?
Thanks, Marvin

I'm trying to help a friend. My little town doesn't have a Lawyer versed in International affairs. LOL I'm hoping someone in Germany will read this and start me in the right direction.

I wish that I had answers for you and your friend... but the only contacts that I have in Europe are in Belgium. I doubt that there would be any helpful info coming from there, but I could always ask if you wanted me to.

Good luck man.

Busryder,
Maybe someone will provide an answer. Thanks for offering.
I tried GOOGLE but no help.

I would start by changing the title of this thread to better reflect the topic.

Then I would read this:

good advice- I opened this thread hoping to learn why my daughter's feet stink. Guess it's still her mother's fault.

I'd bet though that a family member would have to present a document in Germany that states you are the new owner. Any title transfer I've ever seen is based on name alone- not country, etc. I can't believe he'd have to fly to Germany to get this done. Does your friend have any living relatives in Germany?

I think you would have better luck asking here:

It's a good forum, and there are some English speaking German attorneys on there.

You should start with a call to US Customs since they are the ones you will need to deal with when it gets here.

OK, I'm sorry this sort of got out of hand. My main concern is what the German Courts need as proof, etc that the person is the one named in the will. What Import/Export taxes are due etc. I have shipped a car from Germany to NY before and I have delt with with US customs before.
I'm sure an English speaking German Attorney is a must.
Thanks to all for your help. I will take it from here.
Marvin
PS Thank you SAGE and COAD for the links.

Euro so English will be spoken in Germany. Most people speak English and well educated ones would I'm sure. Did you try posting in the International Forum (outside the USA)? Good luck.

you were notified by the court there correct? and you need to find out what that court requires? maybe you should try contacting the court and ask them? seems pretty clear cut, but thats just me.
