My buggy towing my 5500lb boat out of the yard. Its a slight down hill but was hard pulling non the less. No clutch slip, but the tires did spin a bit on the grass. I Moved the boat with the bug because I figured it was tougher then my TDI Jetta and my R6 powered ATV doesn't have a hitch.

The boats out of the way and the grass got the trim it needed.

Is that a Bayliner 2855? Looks a lot like mine.

Details on your hitch setup, please! Been trying to figure out how to set one up without the use of an engine cage as a structural element.

Towing is the easy part. Stopping .... that's where it can get a bit tricky.

Letterman, I saw a hitch setup on a buggy without a cage that tied into the frame horns and the shock mounting towers....no cage.

Seemed to me lacking a bit in support, but the guy who had it says he uses it at a steep boat ramp donkey all the time. Not the same as towing on a highway, but at least an indication of the strength of the hitch.

Towing the boat was only a little stunt, I have no plans on driving on a road or in any gear other then first. I can lift the front of the car by hand without a trailer. With a couple hundred pounds 2 feet behind the back tires the car was really light on the front end.

When I built the car I made the rear bumper/engine cage strong enough to use as a hitch. Its made from sked 40 pipe bent on a cheap bender. It attaches the the horns under the car and to a cross bar between the shock towers and up through the body to the back part of the cage. My intention was to just tow my standup Jetski 400lbs to the beach, but I have used it to tow my quad now. I'd trust it to two 1000 or 1200lbs on the road.

A couple of pics taken while i was building the car.
