After having wondered about this for the 34 years that we have had our bus, I thought that I'd ask:

Why does the engine get loud when decelerating?

But it shouldn't get loud when decelerating :? Since I know you've been through all the engine mounts and the decel valve recently start looking for something that touches when the engine twists against torque. Engine surround metal not butchered out enough to clear the compressor perhaps? (that side rises when decelerating).

A very rapid and loud hammering or buzzing on decel can indicate a rod cap about to let go...probably resulting in a destroyed case, so no rebuild is possible.

But if it's been doing it for years, it must be tin or exhaust rattling. Make sure you have all the screws and bolts.

Could be leaky exhaust depending on the noise..

Are you sure it is engine and not trans related?

The noise occurs when letting off the gas when at a freeway speed. There seems to be an rpm range through which the engine decelerates that causes the additional noise. I am pretty sure that it is the engine itself getting louder. It has always done this.

can you describe the sound and do you feel any vibration. Is it louder with the windows open or closed?

i have the same issue !!!!!!
its normaly when is decelerating
the noise sounds that is coming from the back of the engine like from the shroud area
maybe something lose or a bearing going out ???
it sure dsn't sounds like a eshaust leak!!!

does it sound like a rattling metal chair in the back? If so I'm having the same issue :S

Hey kmmcdonald, I wish you luck tracking down your noise. I'm having a super awesome time trying to track down a similar noise, aka only at a certain rpm range when decelerating and heard best at highway travel. I tried to make a video but I guess the noise didn't capture very well.
