View original topic: Strange Engine Noise

I have a '68 Squareback and it has been running great and just completed a nice road trip down the west coast. I have noticed that there is a strange noise coming from the engine and it sounds metallic. Almost like there is metal scraps at the bottom of the oil pan and they just rattle around from the vibration of the engine. Sometimes it sounds like there is a chunk of metal in the engine that gets knocked around as well. It fires up all the time and runs perfectly except for this issue. Has this sort of thing happened to anyone else? Does anybody have any idea what might be happening? Any sort of help is appreciated. Thanks.

something in the fan? a pulley rubbing the shroud?

There's no shroud other than the cover over the fan and the generator. I looked in and it didn't look like there was anything in there. It sounds like it is within the engine somewhere. It just rattles and makes lots of noise as I drive.

Sounds like one of the fan shroud (the aluminum part that holds the generator)screws has backed out of it's location, and is rubbing on the fan. Note it might almost sound like a main bearing or rod bearing is knocking when it (the screw) gets into the right spot.

The only way to fix it, is to pull the fan belt gaurd (black tin piece), the rear half of the main fan shroud, and the big cooling fan. Inspect the back side of the cooling fan for gouges, and replace as nessessary. Use blue loctite on the screw that fell out, and then go back thru the remaining 3 small ones, and blue loctite them as well. Reassemble everything, torquing the main fan bolt to 93 to 105 ftlbs.
