hey all, enjoying the new forums? i am...ehehee but anyway. i am restoring my first type 3 squareback. i have removed the rear seat and replaced it with a box, so i have pretty much created a VW panelvan :)
but what i want to do is put a stereo system in. amp, 10 stack cd and head deck. i am putting the amd and cd stacker in the box and the head deck in the glove compartment, but what i done know is, where can i put the speakers in my car without modifying the body at all. i can put some small speakers in the rear door, but thats only two...will that produce good sound...

any help would be great

good luck running an amp and all those components usually you just want a low wattage radio and your 4x6 on your dash anything else usually frys the generator im waiting on these guys who say they are coming up with a alternator bolt on conversion kit as soon as i get that your gonna feel

I've seen people mount little speaker boxes in the front footwells, above the lower heater outlets under the dash board.

awesome...do u reckon just the cd stacker and the head deck + 2 speakers in the rear door would produce good enough sound??

i doubt mounting speakers in the rear door would be all that great. i would doubt you get any good bass out of that thin door and the highs and open air would make the square sound like a church. i've got a buddy with 2 6x9's in a box right behind the rear seat, the two speakers up front with the vw innovations mounts and a 200w amp that sounds cool to me.... but i'm not one to need to be heard down the street, i just like it to sound good in the car. i'll probably do something similar.

kewl, 200w amp+stacker+head deck+speakers.....that won't blow my electrics...i mean. if its gonna blow its guts out when i got all the shit in there...i'll be right up shit creek without a paddle...

I'm running a mercriuser 135amp alt w/ 2 optima yellow tops and 11 speaker 1500w system. Big cap and other goodies, prolly conservative compared to some but enough to wake the dead.

Mercruiser is a marine parts manufacture. Does this guy know of an alternator they make that fits type3's? If so I hope he gives more info. Someone told me that a friend of his installed an alternator he ordered from chevy hot rod magazine, no problem. But he wasn't sure what it was. I'm pretty cheap so I haven't been buying alternators just to see if they fit. Bye the way Iv'e been running a 180 watt deck for some time now with no problems even with the h4 highbeams on. The gen light has never even flickered. I know its not the same as a real amp though.

6 channels of 200w 1 ch @ 300w, all @ 2ohms. Active 10 ch X-over, 5 farad digi-cap, 135a Mercruiser Rewound (Pro) Alt(ernator) slight mod, but fully custom, more revealed later...

Ps. Its all unda the deck, and 90% stealth install 8)

In my '72 square I have a 160 watt deck powering a pair of 3 in. infinity reference speakers off the front channels and a pair of 5 in. infinties off the back. Out of the preamp on the deck I'm running a 400 watt sub amp powering a pair of JBL 12s. The 3 in. speakers are mounted in little boxes right above the levers that control the floor vents. I have the 5 in. speakers mounted in the top of the sub box. I have the sub box up against the back of the rear seat pointing towards the back of the car. The funny thing is that when I fold the seat down and move the speaker box towards the front of the car, it loses all the thump. Of course that has to do with acoustics in the vehicle. Because low frequency sounds are non directional, you can place a subwoofer anywhere but you will get the most out of it if it has something to reflect off of.
BTW, I am using a GM one-wire alternator off of a mid '80s chevy truck. I also use one of those on my baja as well.

Ok here's a little more; Blaupunkt (of course), "Casablanca" head unit, Lanzar Cadmium components 6.5's + 4- 1" Silk dome (FF cooled), 2- 8" drivers ( 1 in each door), 2- Neodymium 6x9's atop the rear deck, 1 12" Neodymium sub in custom box behind the rear seat, reflects off the rear window, (deafening). All Lanzar opti-drive amps, X-over and cap. Stinger rca's and 0g wire, distribution blocks, Remote relay amp, etc, etc. 2 optima yellow top deep cells, 2gallons of FatMat Liquid sound deadener, and 96 square feet of Fatmat soundmat. Pretty humble, but I do what I can and upgrade as needed.

you can find info on an alternator installation here...

http://www.icbm.org/erkson/index.html

click on "Toby's toys" then on the "1972 volkswagen squareback" links...

scroll down until he talks about the alternator install...

i dont know what some of you guys are talkin about not bein able to install a bad a$$ system in your squarebacks... and whats all of this frying the generator business?! In my last squareback I ran two 6.5" infinities on front kick panel speaker boxes, two tweeters for the back seat, and a 10" JL Audio sub in the way back. I connected all that to an eclipse 200watt amp with an Alpine deck/ dvd fold down screen and ran it all off my stock electric. NO PROBLEMS! The sound quality was awesome, none of my interior rattled, the car actually insulated the sound clarity really well.... I could even lay down the back and watch a dvd.

you say your last square how long did you have it like that??
