I have a 1963 VW Beetle and I changed the 6 volt to a 12 volt. The guy I picked this up from did not understand wiring at all. He painted the car and I have been trying to put the wires back in the right place.
So after replacing all the bulbs to 12 volt bulbs and the 3 prong flasher relay to a new 12 volt relay.
So the turn signals work, but stop when I turn on the head lights?
Does a 63 have a flasher & turn signal relay and a emergency flasher relay?
Or just a 3 prong turn flasher?
Have had a hard time finding the correct wire diagram to get this to work. |

Ok, I did a lot more reading and found a diagram that worked for what I was doing.
12 volt flasher unit
31 to ground
29a to flasher unit
29 to positive from ignition plus the blue wire on 29 that goes to dash blinker light.
This worked for me, hope this can help a noob like me :)
I get to go have the safety done in the morning and excited!!! |

I think you meant 49 and 49a.
And I think you have it backwards. 49 is power from the fusebox. 49a is the lead going to the dash bulb and the turn signal switch, and 31 goes to a ground.
Now, if you have issues with the flashers not working when the headlights are on, you probably have bad grounds at the bulbs and bulbholders and light assemblies.

I did have that backwords. But all the lights now work :) Now I just need to remove the trans and the motor and replace with new go fast parts.
Thank you for your help. |

Maybe someone can help with another signal relay question for a 6V 65 (possibly Euro) Beetle Sedan.
The black wire with green and white stripes coming off the turn signal (flashing indicator) switch also has a 5 inch green wire T-ed off at the end of it, where it connects to the flasher relay.
My flasher relay has the S, K, + terminals on it, as shown in the regular wiring diagram. But that diagram doesn't have that wire T-ed off the relay, whereas on the "modern Euro-spec T/S Relay diagram does show it, except that wire is blue on the diagram and the relay has 31, +49, and 49c on it instead of S, K and +.
My thoughts are either the PO put in the wrong (or differently labeled) relay, or a different style switch.
So my question is should I route the K terminal of the relay to the K3 (flashing indicator control light) on the speedo, or should I get the other relay? Are the relays interchangeable?
My current relay is an Ideal P/N 268.
Also, does anyone have any pics of where/how the relay clip should be mounted?
Thanks. |

S = Switch (49a)
+ = Power (49)
K = Dash warning light
The body of the flasher unit needs to be grounded - that is, if that Ideal 268 is supposed to be a direct replacement for the one that VW used in the early 1960s. More on that here:

| I think this means that I just don't connect anything to the K terminal on the flasher relay, and just make sure I have the aluminum body of the flasher well grounded in the clip. |

I'm in the process of re-wiring my 63 bug, and I've run into some trouble with the flasher relay. The wiring diagram shows 3 connections, but the 12v flasher relay I bought has four. The terminals are marked 49, 31, K1, and 49a.
Now the notes on my wiring diagram says "9. connect blue green wire from turn signal indicator light to #k (or L, 49a) terminal on flasher relay."
Then it says "10. connect black white green wire turn signal switch wire (not included-attached to switch) to #54 (or L, 49a) terminal on flasher relay."
How do two wires that aren't connected go to the same terminal? Did they just write it wrong or am I missing something here? And what connects to terminal K1?
Also, my wire from the turn signal has another wire coming off it where it's supposed to connect to the flasher relay, where does this wire go? |

Beware of newly produced 4-terminal 12V flasher relays. I've seen them where their "K" terminal is really set up as a "P" terminal - so instead of a open/ground/open/ground signal that the VW system needs, you get a open/hot/open/hot that doesn't work. In these cases, just wire it up as mentioned above, and ignore it and just run it to 49a, the same as VW did on their 12V relays from 1971 to 1998. (in fact, I'd just as soon get one of those realys, just about any junkyard VW from that time range will have one that works fine)
Again,
49 is power in from the fusebox (black wire)
49a goes to the turn switch (black/green/white) which is labelled 54 on old diagrams.
-and also the blue wire to the dash arrow bulb if you're ignoring or don't have a working K or kbl terminal.
31 Goes to ground. |
