I'm swapping waterboxer 2.1 engines in my 91 weekender, since the old engine makes a sort of knocking noise and has only 3 psi oil pressure when warmed up. :D New engine has 50k since rebuild and 1k since heads were redone. The power steering pump on my old engine is dry and has that oxidized aluminum look. The pump on the new(er) engine is sort of oil coated looking, which leads me to suspect its been leaking. I've attached photos.

From the service records that came with the new engine, it looks like power steering lines were replaced 6000 miles ago but the pump has not been replaced. I never replaced the pump in the old engine either. So, which pump would you put in the revamped engine? |

| How smoothly does the shaft spin in the bearing of the dry one? I'd be prone to using that one if it the bearing seems good. |

If the old one is working, why mess with it?
Just lay it aside and bolt it back to the fresh engine when you put it in.
Do not take the lines off just hang by a coat hanger wire until you need it.
Keep the other pump for spare right now.
Looks like the replacement pump is protected already.
Just secure the plugs well and put in a plastic bag and save it for now.
I just would not mess with it. |

| You know which pump is working..the oxidized unit. Use that one. |

Thanks for the advice, I'll go with the one I know works.

Now isn't that just the hot tip I needed! The pump I know works coupled with less mess in the replacement thereof. |

| I was looking at rebuilt units which were $400+.. that being said, no leaks and it worked, I threw it back in action. :) |
