View original topic: Warning chime relay for my Baja build
Wired1 Thu May 17, 2012 3:31 am

Bit of a long shot but I'm hoping someone reading this knows how it is connected. I'm wanting to add some noise to the warning lights and thought I might have a go at using a warning chime relay from an Audi-VW.

I bought this relay off fleabay and I'm trying to work out how it gets connected. So far I can get two different tones from grounding terminal 86 and connecting +12v to either 58 for one tone or 85 for the other but that's all. Can anyone shed any light on how many tones I should be able to get and the connections for it? or failing that, has anyone got a wiring diagram for this relay?

A wiring chart like this one may go along way identifying what terminal designations actually do and what needs to be wired...

By DIN (European Wiring chart)

86 is relay coil +12 volts (operate path)
85 is relay coil ground (operate path)
58 is "side marker lights"
31 is return line from battery (ground)
15 is Switch controlled 12 volts
G ?????
L is left side marker lamps.

Also...

Appears in video he only has two wires connected....

Would be curious as to what you find as I was considering a "chime" for my turn signals...

By the way your steering wheel and instruments are on wrong side of car....

Thanks Dale, that's exactly what I was looking for. Extremely helpful.
The video does look like they only have two leads connected which matches what I have found so far. The tone on the video is one of the two tones I have found, the other tone is similar but uses only two notes.

I bought a Mercedes workshop manual yesterday at a second hand book shop as they use a similar relay like most european cars do. The other pins look like outputs for warning lights.

There is also another version of this relay with two more terminals labelled R and TK. I think R must be the right turn signal but unsure what TK is. I think the G terminal might be from the alternator. The L and R might be to make a sound when the turn signals are working.

And yes we still drive on the left due to our colonial heritage. Two thirds of the world now drive on the right and one third on the left. It makes it tricky when buying some items from abroad such as headlights that dip the wrong way etc. So far I have accidentally ordered the wrong glove box and a rear-view mirror for my beetle but most other parts are the same.

I used a cheap piezeo buzzer from radio shack to connect to my flasher. a 3.99 mod. Used alligator clamps and it takes two seconds to connect. I love it.

Yeah... But sounds like somebodies "backup" alarm.... Looking for something a with a little more "class"...

I know someone who had a brake light in his panel that was wired along with his horn to go off when his oil became too low.

That backup alarm I fear would be too quiet over some exhausts and off roading.

Class in a baja.....yea that's funny. My car is pretty "raunchy" so it fits it well. You do know they sell like 6 different kinds of buzzers. Pick your poison.

Just hook a horn up to the sender. It only sounds for a second when I turn the key on. Idiot lights are for idiots. Let us know if you get that relay working.

After trying several different types of flashing lights on my rail and still coming out of stores and seeing the blinker left on, I put a Radio Shack piezo on each side of the blinkers (no relays to mess with that way)- Yes, it sounds like a back-up alarm, but you'll NEVER have to worry about forgetting to cancel the blinker again :). Works so well I may put them in the baja I'm building also....

On to my third relay now, here is what I found out...
