Ok well i just got a case for 1500cc and took it to ACE in Salt lake utah. Costing me $400 to clean, line bore the case. I thought that was just too much money. I know i cannot be too cheap about the rebuild and want it to last longer. I just want advices from the experienced builders if this situation has happened before. Am i overlooking this price?

To me that sounds like its pretty expensive, I thought machining in Hawaii was expensive! You should just clean the case yourself, all it takes is some time. Line boring should not cost more than $100. You could ship your case to brothers/rimco have a bunch more stuff done and have it shipped back for under $400...just my 2 cents.

Did Art pull all the galley plugs?

BDSBSS23 Thu May 17, 2012 6:24 pm

Im not sure. My dad took the case to them for me. Honestly the case was pretty beaten up when i last saw it. Huge bumps on the saddle so it needed line bore.

Art built my engine, while he's not the cheapest, he is honest and does high quality work.

BDSBSS23 Thu May 17, 2012 6:32 pm

Yes thats why i went to him because he rebuilt my motor once. Ran good but went downhill later in few years. Sold the motor.

Are you sure you didn't misunderstand the price? Align bore at Brother's VW Machine is $45.

Boring, stroker clearance, decking, drilling and tapping all oil galleys and full flow AND align bore all together adds up to a little over $300.

BDSBSS23 Thu May 17, 2012 6:40 pm

those you just mentioned align bored, oil galleries drilled etc... included the price. Basically the price is to refresh the case but i will just ask if he has some cases sitting around that are in better shape and cheaper.

supersuk Thu May 17, 2012 6:45 pm

Ok, if all the ones that Darth mentioned was included, then its a good price since it includes cleaning the case.

Blueprint case $45
Tap oil galleries $65
Tap for full flow $35
Line bore if necessary $85 + bearings and I need your crank to do differential measurement
Soda blasting and ultrasonic cleaning $90

He's not cheap, but [email protected] speaks very highly of him and Art was the only one he recommended to me for lineboring. The costs above were his as of Jan 2012. Extra details like soda blasting and ultrasonic cleaning are very nice though, and well worth it IMO. Bearings could be another part of the cost included

Yeah Art is a very well known engine builder. Ill ask him about different case i can buy from him such as AH or AE cause the one i sent him is a H case so best to get a better case as well since i read alot of negatives about it.

DarthWeber Thu May 17, 2012 7:31 pm

Much better idea. Only thing I'd use an H case for is a period correct restoration, not for a performance build.

I've heard they make nice bonfires too. I haven't had a chance to try mine out yet though.

When it happens post a video please!!

mark tucker Thu May 17, 2012 8:41 pm

yup I would try fer another case.

modok Thu May 17, 2012 10:34 pm

It takes TIME to do it right, and at 60$ an hour it adds up.........
60 is pretty good when you take into account the overhead and such, considering mechanics often charge more than that these days

It does make sense to start with the best case you can get, considering how much labor will end up invested in it

Who's prices are these? Arts?
They are not bad and in fact dirt cheap if that line bore includes bearings but what is blueprint for $45. For that price it's probably only measuring the line bore, cam bore and cylinder bore. nothing fancy at all. A real Bluepring of the case could be in the hundreds.

Yeah, those were Art's as of January. As I read it, bearings are in addition to the $85 for the line bore service. My understanding of the blueprinting was that it was the entire case, but I didn't ask to clarify, so I'm not 100% - don't quote me on it. I do know that he sells new cases that he's already blueprinted on his website. http://www.aircooledengineering.com/products.htm

Alright thanks for the replies. I was just wondering about the price but ill find a better case in better shape because $400, i do not have that kind of money right now.

Little Harry Fri May 18, 2012 8:39 am

Here in Texas I had the case inspected, line bored, crankshaft ground, rods rebuilt, and flywheel machined for $300.00
