View original topic: Better Brake Shoes?

Now that I finished installing an AC Industries disc brake kit on the front of my Baja Bug, it's time to fix the rear brakes.

My car is equipped with Bus reduction boxes, so there is no disc brake kit available for the rear.

My rear shoes are soaked in gear oil on the driver's side. I need to replace the seals and shoes on both sides.

I'd like to find better than stock shoes for the rear. Something that grabs better and stops the car faster. I remember some company offering shoes with better material years ago, but I don't know who that was. It was some sort of woven metallic stuff.

Anyone know of a place that makes better brake shoes? My car has 1962 Bus rear brakes.

Aircooled.net or their better website vwparts.aircooled.net have them "super stopper" ones i think

I just checked their web site. They seem to offer the "Super Stopper" shoes for just about every application except for mine.

I sent them an email to find out if they have them, but are just not listed on the site.

Kymcos sells a shoe called better binder. Not sure if they have one for your app. Listed here on Samba classifieds . Search for better binder

Long ago we used to run shoes that were this almost soft black crud interwoven with a fiberglass like weave. They gripped like crazy, dusted even worse and wore fast. But they would lock up fast!

Not really...

type 3 brakes are typically used when going to Bug stuff in the back. You can put them on but you'd have to have some custom spacer type deal as the type 3 drums will be too short for the stub.

You can put 944 rear disks on a RGB rear end, machining is required of the bearing housing and you'd have to run another custom spacer.

Maybe search locally for someone who relines shoes?

I would replace axle seals, get new shoes, and adjust the brakes really really tight.

When I do my brakes, I adjust each pad out at a time until, both pads, are absolutely maxed out and then back off about 3 turns. I find a full, no play pedal, and amazing stopping power and not too much brake dust.

Wow! They are expensive!

I looked here:

I found just about every application except the one I need.

That might be more than I need.

Maybe I will check with Kymco to see if they have the Bus shoes I need.

I am not sure how well the carbotech shoes work on the street. If I remember correctly, they work best when heated (racing).

That's true. Maybe I can find a place locally that does that.

They're fine even on the first stop in winter, certainly better than stock shoes anyway. They are pricey but then they outlast standard shoes in heavy use IME.
