Anybody put one of these on a baywindow? If so how do you like it and how did you attach it? Did you use the mounts that come with it? Pics are much appreciated. Thanks

i have the bus depot awning that is made to fit the vw gutters $129....how much is this one

spencersk8 Mon May 21, 2012 12:08 pm

i believe they are $300 but they only weigh 15lbs and cover just as much area as the $600 50 lb bolt on awnings that roll out. Seems like a pretty neat little awning

It shows a pic of it screwed into the roof.

I have a shady boy awning on my'69 camper. It mounted on brackets and the holes are under the poptop edge. I hated to drill holes in the the roof, but I and primed, painted, and caulked, I used it camping in the Reno Air Races lot. Came back one time and it had collapsed in the wind, but no damage. It is also good for use in storing a snow shovel outside the vehicle.

I have a shady boy on my bus now for 4 years. It is a great awning. Pricy but well worth it. Yes you need to drill into the roof. What do they say? Measure twice and drill once!

To keep it from blowing up or down onto the bus you should get the hold down straps and guide poles they sell.

I will have a look to see if I have a picture I can post. If you are real curious check out the vanagon posts. The awning is more common with them.

I've got a Shady Boy and love it. Probably the best non-essential accessory I have purchased for the bus. Worth every penny. Easy to mount but like others have said, you do need to drill holes for the brackets.

You HAVE to drill holes? No way to attach to the drip rails? Holes = moisture = rust = no thanks.

Well, the holes/bolts for the awning bracket are completely covered by the poptop, just like the mounting hardware for the poptop itself is. Non-issue in my opinion. I've had mine for five years and no hint of a problem.

Yikes! I'll drill a sneaky hole here or there, but not in my roof!

I'd go Bus Depot.

the bus depot awning has a clamp that fits OVER the pipe on the awning and UNDER the bus gutter with rubber protective peices so you can't scratch your paint...simply tighten the supplied wingnuts..If a 60 yr old grandpa can do it alone.......????

Thanks for the info. I too am weary of drilling holes. Wonder how hard it would be to modify existing brackets to make it attach it to the rain gutter

Any more pics or info on this matter? Still trying to decide

I took a long look at th BD one when I was awning shopping ... and the Fiamma one ... and some of the innovative home-made designs that some have posted. For me, the Shady Boy seemed like the best option for several reasons. I couldn't be happier with it.
