Hello
What is the right starter bushing?
I brought a 67 home yesterday and it had no starter. I found a good 12 volt starter here but when I put it in it made awful sound. Took it out and put a bushing I had here in it and still the awful sound when cranking and engine was turning. Is there two size of bushings or is there a different start I need to buy. The engine turns free and runs when push started.
Thank you |

so here is what i'm think'n
Maybe this is a earlier bus and has been changed over to 12 volt. Is there a bushing that goes for 12volt starter to 6volt trans.
The title says its a 67. Here is the vin 237132904. This vin doesn't look right unless there was a miss print and should be 217132904.
Can anyone help I.D. The proper year? This is the m code. M674 s1386 719 Ja 163038.
thanks for all the help |

Yes, there are two different bushing inside sizes. Bigger for 6 volt and smaller for 12 volt.
You need to figure out which starter and flywheel you have.
Starter should have voltage stamped into the body of the starter, but do not mistake the solenoid voltage stamping as to what voltage the starter is.
Flywheel that is 6 volt has 109 teeth, where the 12 volt has 130. |

| If that is your VIN then it is a 67. As stated above there are multiple bushings for all the combos so you really need to know. You most likely need a standard 12v bushing, or an auto starter with self supporting shaft and no bushing required. |

found the problem.
Pulled the engine out and the flywheel is a mess. The teeth on it is chewed all up. Going to replace it.
Thanks everyone for your help |

Well thought I had it.
Replace the flywheel and still get awful noise when cranking. Sound like something is binding up and starter turns the engine slow. Just like its binding. What could cause this. I'm stumped. |

| That's probably how the flywheel got torn up, running the wrong starter, so the teeth don't mesh, so something has to give. |

| think I'm going to have to try a auto trans starter. I even tried a 6volt starter. Still had binding. |

| Fyi, an autostick beetle starter is about $50 at Oreilly. Should be similarly priced at your FLAPS if you don't have Oreilly. I used 73 as the year when I looked it up online. |

I thought your $50 price was lower than I paid a couple of years ago, I checked and it was. But the price keeps dropping on these autostick rebuilds. Autozone has them for $39, that's a smoking deal.
Just save your receipt, its a lifetime warranty. |

Going to pick one up today. The only thing is that they'll have to order it in for me. Will take a few day to get here. Got Advanced auto not to far from me. Will let you know how it goes.
Thanks. |

Just thought that I would wrap this on up. Couldn't get any manual trans starter to work right. Put in a auto starter and it works perfect.
Thanks Everyone for your help. I would not have thought of the auto starter. Without your help.
Thanks. Tony |

Just wanted to bump this to say that I was having terrible starter problems in my 59 SC. I have a 12v bellhousing, and thought I had the right bushing- but nothing would work- the starter just barely turned the engine over and the battery cable would get hot trying.
I just went to the auto parts store and got an auto starter and it works great! No more bushing mess.
If anyone needs one- all the auto parts stores used the same part #16300 for it.
They call it their generic one- but they are Bosch. |

I have a similar problem but I have a 6v flywheel and a 6v starter gear. After driving for some time, the cables get hot and the bus acts like the battery is dead when I stop and try to restart like when I stop for gas. I usually have to push start it. I will see if the bushing is fitted correctly.
Thanks for the follow up on this. |

Thanks for the follow up on this.
Make sure BOTH bushings are good. The one in the front of the starter wears out also.
If cables are getting hot, it is probably due to bad cables or bad/corroded/loose connections. |

I just wanted to thank you guys for contributing. This thread, especially what I put in bold, helped me while sleuthing starter troubles I'm having with a Single Cab I just bought. |
