theres a strong trace of gas in the oil when i pull out the dip stick. could this just be from flooding or does something need to be adjusted. also i recently put new spark plugs and wires in the engine and i checked them because the engine would not fire. they were a little wet but very black.

I would check your fuel pump!

I had a bus once that sat for long periods of time. Like, 2 or 3 weeks. And it had the same problem. WHat it was, I didn't discover till the engine went dead and lost all compression. I found that teh float was stuck open allowing gravity to take place. Any gas above float level in the gas tank would bypass the float and seep into the manifold. Then into the cylinders, around the rings and into the oil pan. Once this mixed with the oil, it thinned it out. When I ran the bus, the gas burned out of the oil along with every trace of lubercating properties causing the engine to loose compression and then lock up. DOH!!!!!

Try checking the carb first. That's where I'd start.

How do you check the carb anyways?

I had that prob too . It turned out to be the gasket for the fuel pump. change that and the float needle and you should be ok. get a carb rebuild kit (10 dollars) and it the needle will be in it along with a diagram of what the float needle looks like.
