I don't get why my carbs (dual 44 idfs) always get tiny pieces of dirt in the idle jets. I'll take off the carbs and thoroughly clean them out, it will run great for a couple weeks then the same thing will happen. I have 2 fuel filters and the screens in the carbs, i have air cleaners with the K&N oil on them which i clean more often than i need to because i'm constantly pulling a carb off to clean it out. I've never had this problem with any other carbs, they are older Italian webers which have been on my engine for 2+ years.
any suggestions or does anyone else have this problem? |

check for cracks in the carb, it is possible it has a crack allowing dirt in
otherwise make sure your air cleaner is on correctly-no gaps in base |

Gauze filters actually filter WORSE after you clean them, K&N even admits it.

| How old are your filters? They shrink as they age, and the rubber bases don't seal quite as well after time, and the rubber deteriorates to the point that it starts to come apart in perfect tiny idle jet plugging chunks. |

| What bases do you have for the filters are they cast or steel? |

I made my own jet doctors out of brake line. Works like a champ at about a 5 buck investment. 30 minutes of labor. Done

| The thread I posted is MURZI thread also. I'm using spanish idf's now and never a problem but my old style italian 40's did plug up every now and than. If I ever rebuild and use them I will use MURZI's method to update them. Pretty good budget carb tip. |

| My bases are steel ones, Empi I think. My filters are old, I should probably replace them. I like how you made the jet doctors! I was wondering if those actually help. |

I also run a set of the older Italian carbs (40 IDFs) and I'm only good for 3 weeks before the bogging and popping. :? Wouldnt be so bad but with the idle jets under the filter base, its a linkage adjustment for me every time. :x |

| They might be warping when you tighten down, the tubes pictured above will solve that |

Steel filter bases and old filters are the cause.... Cast filter bases fit better both on carbs and filters.... And jet doctors are the answer.... Dirty idle jet are from air intakes NOT a FUEL delivery problem.

......
What size brake line did you use?
I see where these are mounted, but how do they work? Is it just that they keep the intake for the jets at a higher level behind the filters? |

| K&N filters are terrible, that's why they flow so much air. There is a reason that they aren't OEM on anything sold with a warranty. Get new filters at least, as the cloth degrades over time, and shrinks, and maybe a pre filter. |

Yeah thats what I was thinking, both of my fuel filters are clean, I'm gonna pop some new filters on and try to do the jet doctor trick. |

Yes basically, the stock weber air inlet for the idle jets are under the filter base. I would think it would at least help the airflow to the jets better. |

| i have the same issue. Im using prefilters on top of the actual stacks now and i used some regular grease between the filter top and carb. also using a new papergasket .working so far. |

| The black plastic floats occasionally release tiny flakes that will plug small idle jets. |

| Don't waste your money on the jet doctors. Replace the stamped steel air cleaner top and base with the CB cast aluminum and your done. |
