A little over 2 years ago, we found a little 1960 Bug sitting under a cover on the pavement. After enquiring further it turns out that the car had just been listed for sale online. A quick discussion about the price and the car was ours.
Below is a condensed timeline of a 2 year restoration process from start to finish (As it they ever really get finished).

Thanks for your note - The brakes we used were just the EMPI ones, with Airkewld Brakes to come later :)

Cheers,
Trevor:)

That thing is beautiful! Well done!! Could ya give us a little info on the wheels and suspension? i.e. dropped spindles? Who makes the wheels and what size of wheel and tires?

Again, awesome looking!

Sure, no problem:

Wheels are 17"x7.5" Porsche 'Turbo Twists',
Beam - Link Pin front end. 4" narrow Airkewld Air Beam
2" drop spindles,
EMPI Front and Rear disc brakes
Tyres - 205/40/17 Tyres (Front & Back).

Cheers,
Trevor:).

Beautiful Bug! 8)

Supersharp!!! I really like the banjo wheel and red interior.

sharptailhunter Sun Jun 03, 2012 9:33 pm

Thanks for the info. Do you get any tire-fender or tire-headlight bucket rubbing with your setup? Why did you go with the Airkewld beam instead of just narrowing the stock beam? I'm just curious because I have a '65 that I want to lower in similar way. Also curious about your front and rear disc brakes. Were they difficult to install or just a bolt on type item?

Thanks - I must agree that the Banjo steering wheel looks great (It wasn't my first choice, but glad I went with it) and the red interior is getting a lot of positive comments. Thanks again.

I had originally put on a 2 inch narrow beam, but soon saw that there were clearance issues. I had known of Airkewld for a while and started having banter with Pete@airkewld. After a few exchanges, Pete worked out what would work with the wheels (The Porsche Turbo Twists) and disc brakes that I already had. One look at the quality of the beam online and I was sold. The quality matched what I was looking for. At first I thought the car would be a rat but it all snowballed into a different beast after I fell for the Airkewld equipment.

With regards clearance issues, I haven't had any fender or headlight bucket issues. The 205/40/17 tyres also helped with clearance.

Do yourself a favour and chat to Pete@airkewld, he's uber helpful and a really good guy.

I hope this helps answer some of your questions. If not PM me and I can send you some closer pics if need be.

Kind Regards,
Trevor:).

I really like the little (but not so little) touch of relocating the decklid seal to the decklid it's self.

Took me a second to catch that.

How did you affix a seal to the decklid? Just a adhesive seal?

Thanks mate,

I bought them from Piersideparts.net (which changed its' name from vwparts.net) and they are called Werksberg deck seals or sometimes referred to as 'Mexican' seals, as the Mexican bugs had the seal put on the deck lid. The seal just clicks onto the deck lid. Here's a link:

Cheers and thanks,

Thanks for the info. I was totally unaware that seal was available.

I am going to go with that on my '62 in conjunction with my standard seal since, I recently noticed I have a spot where my standard seal does not completely (for lack of a better word) seal my engine compartment.

Thanks again.
