I am in the process of building a 16" Syncro for offroading.

Does anyone have links to companies that will produce alloy or steel, 15 or 16" rims, with my choice of ET, 5x112 and offer bolt on bead lockers???

Weld didnt have anything that would fit.

Would sandrail Guys use 5x112 mounting?

Not interested in adapters or spacers for this application.

Tomorrow, I am going to a 4x4 products sales event in Ontario,Ca with all of the top manufacturer's in attendance so I will ask the wheel mfg reps.

I looked into it when I was thinking about wheels and found some interesting stuff. I would have probably gone with a weld on ring to go on some stockish steel wheels. I would be concerned about the Diamond Racing wheels on a vanagon. My experience with them is they like to taco VERY easy, at least the race car versions.

I just went with a eurovan 15" steel wheel. They are as thick or thicker than the vanagon wheels so I am not worried about load rating or tacoing them.

Balancing the wheels was also a concern of mine. I still drive mine to the 'off-road' and that can mean 3-4 hours on the highway. Some use water or bb pellets inside the tire to balance it.

In the end, after discussing it at length with my 4x4 coworker, I decided it wasn't for me. I feel there isn't enough articulation to do anything that warrants bead locks and with the BFG AT KO tires, I can air down as far as I need to get out of anything.

It would be cool to see done though, definitely post pics if you do it!

There is just one lead after talking to 4x4 wheel manufacturers at the Ontario Convention Ctr today, but it is very promising.

The Buggy 101 Bead-lock and no bead-lock versions don't have the 5x112 hole pattern, but everything else is very close to what we are seeking...for the 1st time.

The rep was too busy to discuss in depth so we started an email exchange at his request.

This is something that I've been looking into since I started designing the Lightweight.

My issue is slightly different in that I'm limited to the Audi S4 Fuchs forged wheels as they're about the only wheels which will fit over the larger Porsche brakes that I'm running.

As such, my options are looking for an Aluminium beadlock kit for the wheels I have...

... or use the internal beadlock inner tubes which are around now.

There is one other thought and that's to use two piece wheels and have an internal frame that sits inside the tyre and is compressed between the wheel halves, beads and inside of the wheel rims holding everything in place.

There are positives and negatives to all of these.

Beadlocks

1) Weld on beadlocks.

Negatives

Unless you weld on beadlocks to the inner and outer of each wheel (lots and lots of work), you'll still be able to pull the tyre off the side that you haven't fitted one to.

Weight, add big chunks of metal to your wheels really adds weight and mass to your wheels. This not only slows your vehicle down but puts a lot more stress on the drivetrain.

Expensive in comparrison to buying wheels already fitted with beadlocks.

Positives

Much stronger wheels so you're unlikely to bend one.

Look cool! (ok they look cool to me!)

You get to chose your wheel style and have individual wheels.

Staun and Inner Air beadlocks.

Negatives

Expensive. For this price, you can buy wheels or kits to convert your wheels.

Changing the tyres is a lot more work.

Doesn't strengthen your wheels and with such low pressures, you're more likely to bend your rims.

Positives

You can't see them so they look like stock wheels

Weight, you're adding a piece of canvas and a valve...

Two Piece wheels

Negatives

Expensive

Hard to find

Doesn't strengthen your wheels

Positives

Doesn't add lots of weight to the wheels

You can't see them so they look stock

What is the load rating of the Audi wheel above?
It looks too weak for off-roading, I need the rear wheels 3000lbs max load minimum for my near future project which will involve towing besides the normal usage.

Derek Drew uses them with his CV wheels and 30.5" BFGs.....each wheel weighs 70+lbs :shock:

So Im told the internal units weigh 5lbs.
The BFGs in combination with the CV alloys, the rest.

So still focussing on weight....how do we all feel about modifying CLKs with an external lock or using the internals with them?
Very light wheel, for sure

I have tons of them, but figured they were a better crossover or stictly pavement alloy.
My concerns are with the lug nut mating area of the alloy...very thin for heavy duty Syncro offroad abuse.

I have planned on using a steel rim, but maybe someone can point me in a direction of strength...but not adding excess pounds.

Now I understand your project is lightweight.

I haven't managed to find that out yet, but as they're forged and made by Fuchs, I'm expecting that they will probably be more than strong enough.
